SANTO DOMINGO. - The president of the Dominican Industries Association (AIRD) today called president Leonel Fernandez’s speech before Congress disappointing, because it didn’t delve into important topics such as government corruption, education, citizen security and the lack of institutionalism.

Ignacio Mendez said he doesn’t understand why Fernandez didn’t treat in depth such timely issues agreed to in the recent national dialogue, including the crusade to enforce the laws.

The business leader said on the fight against corruption the chief executive spoke only of the Ethics Commission, an entity he said hasn’t functioned in the last five years. "For us it was a deception in the sense that we expected it to be much more precise on the topics agreed to in the Summit, but we’re left with the hope that the Follow Commission’s mandate will be enforced."

Aside from disappointing, Mendez said Fernandez’s speech wasn’t encouraging for industrialists, but expects that the proposals announced will be accepted.

The AIRD president, interviewed on Diario Libre AM, also criticized that while the government officials’ salaries are “exaggerated,” the police agents earn an “insignificant” one.

Of course he did. Dominicans believe corruption is good. They are raised thinking the more corruption you are involved in, the more macho and upper status you have.

Why would he talk about the corruption that is so rampant? He has chosen to do nothing about it. Would you expect him to announce that he doesn't care? His actions speak louder than any words he could use. Education? We are ranked the lowest of 134 countries in the most recent Worldwide Competitiveness Report in primary education. What could he possibly say? Some day he hopes that we are #125? Institutionalism? All power and money come from the President. Are you expecting him to change that?

Face it. His speech was accurate, both for what it did and did not say.

Well, all he has to do is purge military officers, while the whole house goes up in the flames of corruption. Maybe, if they fire all officers in the armed forces, then hire and promote new ones, people will be fooled into thinking that something is being done about the lack of ethics;
When the truth is that the nature of the whole political structure is corrupt to the core...
It's like secret "termite" destruction of a structure from within.

Somethings are better left unsaid.....Calle boca, pola!

He is just following on the the footsteps of his "dominican idol": Joaquin Balaguer. Still, he is the best we have right now on Dominican political arena.
