SANTO DOMINGO. - The Environment Ministry (Semarena) today banned the hunting in the entire national territory and suspended all previously issued permits and licenses of all activities that lead to the capture, death, or harassment of wild fauna, and the harvest of eggs, nests and derivatives.
Environment minister Jaime David Fernandez Mirabal said Semarena resolution 11-2009 replaces resolution 15-07
The official made the announcement when he presented Semarena’s calendar for 2009, called “The country that we want,” which contains 73 zones that comprise Dominican Republic’s protected areas.
Fernandez Mirabal said the calendar is an example of the country’s wealth in biodiversity, and seeks to emphasize the importance of protecting the natural resources and the prevention of forest fires.

That's good news. In the DR even the regular neighbor harass domestics animals like dogs and cats and treat them very badly. The kids learn the same way. Last time I went to the DR, I saw a cat crossing the street, but when a boy saw the cat; he started riding his bicycle faster trying to hit the cat with his bicycle.

All hunting of fauna is banned. Is this a trend with the hypocritical bans......?

GREAT news ii is sad to see species that are endangered like the Manati and the Sea Tortoise being hunted even after the fact that people are aware that they should leave these animals alone. Hopefully this law will deter and enforce harsh penalties for those that do not abide by the law. Josean when is there open season on you? I believe that your species is not on that list. So people take aim and fire!!!!

What do Harassing dogs and cats and the killing of protected species have to do with hunting?
It was already against the law to kill or harass seas tortose or Manatees.
Those who killed the manatee were not hunters they were POACHERS!!!!
All this does is harass true sportsman, hurt the tourism industry and a prelude to the confiscation of all firearms
From: Dominican Republic
Unfortunately this will amount to nothing....as is the case with literally all bans put in place by this country.
Goulet...they let you out of detention early????? LOL

anthonyc, right on time with the lunatic comments. how in God's name does a ban on wanton killing of animals affect the tourist industry? hey, if people buy a ticket to the DR just to come and kill something, maybe he should not be coming here, anyway. it is not as though he is planning to do any rustic cooking, anyway , transforming his prey into a five star gourmet meal in his penthouse suite. besides, how do tourists get their hands on hunting rifles, and other accoutrements of destruction?

well, danny, i am glad to see that someone else besides myself is dismayed by the conduct you refer to. i used to play dominoes with a group of men , near to a rather large tree. ever so often, gorgeous birds would light on the branches, looking for prey. that would bring the game to a summary halt, as grown men would scurry here and there, looking for rocks to throw at the lovely creature. should the bird be unaware of the peril around him, he would eventually be struck, and oftentimes killed .the individual who effected his death was praised for his wonderful aim, and the backslapping lasted a good two minutes. then they would hurl the carcass into the bushes, unceremoniously. what in heck is that all about, i ask you?

Nice to see some people with hearts here
I married a dominican woman and I am now disabled and plan to move there after the firstof the year
They have no STPCTA there the way they treat horses is sickening it was all i could do to keep from pulling a man way from his skinny sick animal that he was beating with a whip and use it on him instead.
I no longer hunt though i have nothing against it as a good way to maintain population and create money and jobs to preserve speices
I just like to fish and hope to do as much as I can once i arrive.
My wife is from Bonao west to santo domingo about two hours there are no bugs there I worry how they got rid of the bugs
Last visit her siter got a cat from the country and a chicken the cat was poisoned almost immediately the chicken got loose and ended up in someone else's pot
Animals has no good treatment there and it is a sad reflexion on the population in my estimate .
The people I have let were all friendly though nee
