SANTO DOMINGO. - Dominican Republic’s economic conquests don’t advance as fast as its social ones and unfortunately, its wealth is increasingly concentrated in the hands of a few, said Monday National Statistics Office (ONE) director Pablo Tactuk.

"We’ve advanced in many aspects, mainly in the economic variable, but not so in the social aspect. But all in all the country has advanced," the official said.

Interviewed by newspaper Diario Libre, Tactuk said he regrets that national debts and subsidies erode the National Budget.

The ONE director affirmed that the current administration aims to brings back a total awareness on the demographic importance and need for measures and data to set forth development programs and, most importantly, those which seek to reach the goals of the Millennium.

“We just published Dominican Republic 2008; It has all the available statistics, and need only to enter them in our Web site www.one.gob.do," he said.

And it is in their best interests to keep the people uneducated and poor and dependent on their largesse. The government is complicit in this conspiracy to not educate the people, because an educated populace would not allow the transgressions of our elected officials to continue-

Juanb, I do agree with you and that is the reasons the rich gets richer and the poor jumps on boats, commits crime and die young. no money no education, no health insurance and plenty of poverty.

Is there a Dominican Obama to restructure the wealth??? No one should eb surprised; DR truly is a country of haves and have-nots and with the complete lack of accountability except to those poor folks who dare steal to eat and live. At some point some one is going to snap and take out a couple of those responsible for continually allowing this system to exist.

If you took all the money in the world and divided it equally among all the world's population in 5 years the vast majority of the money would be back in the rich people's pockets. That is basic human nature. You can fight it all you want but that is the way it is.
It doesn't matter what political or economic system you apply. The only difference is under free market capitalism there is less poverty.
In socialist/Communist systems the difference between the haves and have-nots is greater. Just look at countries like North Korea, Zimbabwe, Cuba...ect.

Allelujah BASTA Well said! While most Americans have two jobs living check by check trying to make a living, choosing between eating or paying rent. Living by credit and amassing debt, while the wages of most Americans has remained stagnant for over 30 years, welcome to the "Global Village" terrible state of affairs right. The U.S. economy use to be self sufficient but greed and global economic strategies has turned this once prosperous manufacturing economy, into a consumer driven and further indebted economy.

The uneven distribution of wealth is due to the administration's neoliberal policies. Neoliberalism and the free market create wealth and contribute to the development of the country, but unfortunately it is not sustainable for too long i.e., Reaganomics... As the world moves towards a more "social market economy" in the 21st century I believe that the distribution of wealth will be more equal.

Hey Gizmo and Basta...
Don't like the American system?

Why don't you try making a living and feeding your family in such worker's paradises as Zimbabwe, North Korea, Mynamar or (gasp) Cuba.

Jeez the poor in the U.S.A. have freaking Cable TV.

Cuando era solo el Partido Dominicano, el Partido Reformista los mismo; Unos cunatos controlanban todo!
When the PRD, and the PLD started taking turns at the Administration of the countriy's wealth some thought that things would change.....Fat change....The names change but the situtation in Los Minas, or Herrera is still the same.
Agronomos, Ingenieros, Licenciados, y Generales own the country....Be they Red, Green, or purple........Con el jacho prendio!

"Dominican wealth in the hands of a few, Statistics chief says."
Well golly !!! Daah. "Is there a surprise here?? why any comment at all"
So what is the point? He is not telling us anything new, that we don't already know.

It isn't necesary to be a brain surgeon to figure that one out. It has always been that way in all of history in most forms of governments, all capitalistic and individualistic societies. Winner takes all, that is a given, that's just the way it is. Has not anyone heard of the 80/20 rule?
80% of the wealth in the hands of 20% of the people. It's just that simple.
I guess Mr Pablo Tactuk needs to justify his cushy salary with the National Statistics Office and just could not come up with anything better to say.

Even business applies the same principle. The typical compensation package for meeting or not meeting sales quotas: First prize a beautiful brand new 2009 Mercedes Benz, Second prize a shiny set of steak knives, Third prize YOU ARE FIRED!!!!!
