SANTO DOMINGO.- Cardinal Nicolas de Jesus Lopez Rodriguez yesterday warned he’ll not yield an inch against the intentions by "butcher doctors, merchant legislators" and authorities that seek to legalize abortion, affirming that it’s an attempt to impose capital punishment in the Dominican Republic, whose feminists describe as politcal blackmail.

He said the church will be on the alert to prevent the approval of that practice, because "it’s a way to look to open a gap to later impose all others (capital punishment), that’s what’s happening throughout the world and it’s a pity, because nothing can justify the killing of a creature."

"Never, I‘ll never yield an inch on that point, because for me it’s a perversion, an iniquity, it’s absolutely an unjustifiable crime," Lopez Rodriguez said emphatically.

Feminists call it political blackmail

The feminist leader Denise Paiewonsky on Sunday said the Catholic Church used the Sermon of the Seven Words as political blackmail to pressure the legislators in charge of debating and approving the bill to Reform the Constitution.

She said in the last few months the catholic leaders are increasingly nervous with the topic of the partial legalization of abortion and their statements have become more threatening, their criticism of the Government has intensified and the antiabortion campaign reached the limits of obsession.

Paiewonsky, in addition to recriminating the catholic clergy’s leadership for its participation in the 1963 coup against Juan Bosch, said the attacks against president Leonel Fernandez’s government stem from, contrary to the PRD and the PRSC parties, the ruling PLD has yet to dictate an antiabortion policy to its legislators.

If the good cardinal, when he becomes POPE in a few years, wants to pursue this issue from rome, so be it, abortion is an individual decision, and not one of heaven and hell, of course the second option is he gives up his position as head of the catholic church latin america, become a down dressed priest and run for congress like other priests have done in the past.

as far as the "FEMINISTS" AR CONCERNED MAYBE THEY SHOULD TAKE UP OTHER ISSUES. LIKE POVERTY, HUNGER, FEMALE, AND CHILD ABUSE, EDUCATION, HEALTH.
THESE ISSUES NEED A STRONG AND VOCAL HAND

COME ON GIRLS, THE PEOPLE NEED YOUR HELP, ORGANIZE AND MARCH

But, the same cardinal and his fellow voodoo guys will sit still and watch children die of malnutration or no nutration at all, although this religious organization is loaded with wealth. Of course their power over people can only continue if they keep them poor, uneducated and hungry.
What a scam.

The issue is not about destroying human lives, but saving those who are in danger of losing theirs. I think is ludicrous for politicians to think that it's okay to let a woman die of pregnancy complications because aborting a fetus is so wrong. Why are they so afraid of the Catholic Church? If the politicians are going to stand for the beliefs of the church, and not the state, maybe the dominican people should vote for the cardinal for president.

What silly comments! What does this have to do with the fact it's wrong to butcher a poor defenseless unborn child with no one, not even you, to defend her?

people should have the right to do what ever they want with there body!

so abortion is a choice! as well as same sex marriage and the church shoudn't interfere in nothing related since is more of a political case!

Yes it most certainly is about destroying innocent unborn life. That is exactly what an unborn child is, and all the false rationalizations and excuses in the world can't change that! And what's more, Dominicans as a large majority already know that, so the Cardinal is simply defending the rights of the people against anti-human, anti-life, abortion promoting militants -- that's his job, in part.

Gracias a Dios!

ScandiViking, i like your thinking. the Catholic Church and the right wing zealots in the evangelical movements will blow up abortion clinics, but advocate the death penalty! as you said "what a racket".

Of course people should have the right to do what they see as right with their own body, just not whatever they want to do to another person's body. When what they want to do with their own body violates the rights of others, of another's body, that is very wrong. Abortion destroys a child who owns her own body, that's the whole point -- abortion poses as a "freeing" of a woman's body from the body occupying her body. Let any murder suspect in court use that defense -- "I was just doing whatever I wanted with my own body when I pulled that trigger; in fact I never even touched anyone else's body!" -- and see how far it gets them!

How irrational it is also to defend abortion by claiming the death penalty is also wrong. If that is wrong the immorality of abortion is a complete no-brainer. I get the impression these objections
