Santo Domingo.– Judge Jose Aquino, from the Administrative Chamber of the Central Electoral Board (JCE) passed a resolution which would prohibit parents from giving their children odd and confusing names.

The resolution was passed due to the large number of names in the Civil Registry that make references to movie characters, clothing and car lines, body parts, vulgar slang terms, among other sources of inspiration.

According to Aquino, many names "are extravagant, deceptive, vulgar, foreign or don't allow to clearly determine the child's sex."

Some of the "creative" names, which can be verified at the JCE website (www.jce.do) are Peligroso Suero, Nerdo Alberto, Adicto de los Santos, Seno Jimenez, George Washington Feliz, Alien Sesale, Bruce Lee Felix, Rambo Mota, Nat King Cole Martinez, Amarillo Polanco, Deseado De Oleo, Toshiba Gomez, Herida Carrasco and Chocha Colon.

one of the wonderful things about the Dominican republic is the relative lack of government interference in people´s lives and I would tell the electoral board to butt out and let the parents decide what names they will give their babies..and the more different they are the more interesting it is ..what an impertinence !!!

Well said.

A few years ago, I read that the office in charge of registering new birth in the province of Qubec (in Canada) tried to do the same thing. Apparently, a couple wanted to name their kid Ivory and they refused because of the Dove's Ivory Soap...

How intrusive and ridiculous! I could understand objections to obscene names but, except for these instances, it should be the province of parents to name their children anything they want. Grown children could always change their names if they don't like it.

The govt's tentacles clearly extend too far in DR, ans we need less govt and not more.

I would think that govt should more effectively spend its time on eliminating corruption and drug crimes. Please leave dominican parents to decide what names are best for their children, and get a life.

Glomar and Ricardolito,

No offense but, are you guys nuts? With the level of merciless teasing that exists on our schools (or in our society in general), setting a child with a ridiculous-arse name is the perfect recipe for a disaster. If the child doesn't end up committing suicide (as many children with ridiculous arse names or other kinds of school related afflictions do on the US), he/she might end up with an inferiority complex that only few are able to overcome. Besides, we wouldn't be the first (nor the last) to come up with the ridiculous name prohibition idea, cuz' some central american countries, Peru and Japan have established it as well. The most interesting one of the former cases is the one of Japan, where the government has strictly forbidden parents to name their children with non-Yamato names (read, foreign names). That's why you won't find anybody calling himself Michael Kojima or Michelle Suzuki over there.

Personally, I don't see anything wrong with using foreign names. Hopefully the parents know the spelling and the meaning, because I have seen hillarious names when they have been guided by phonetics alone.
My daughter went to school with a girl named Marijuana Cocaine (I kid you not). I didn't believe it until I saw the year school book. Needless to say, she has had the hardest time finding a job. Now she's planning on having her name changed. She has also grown tired of people saying "Your name is what?" I guess no one has to wonder what her parents did for recreation.

Hi paisanos! Why on earth this ministery wants to stick their nose in this business? I would call my child whatever i like. Of course , i understand that there should be certain limit, but names like George Washington, Alien, Seno, peligroso, etc. What's the problems with them. If it's so they'd better start by Changing streets' names such as G. Washington( El Malecon), Sarasota Ave., Abraham Lincorln and so on. On the contrary I wouldn't name my child: Amor, Alegria, Bin Laden or Geoge Bush, would I?
P/S : Chocha means ( Tia) in Polish, Curva means Whore(puta). Why don't these ministers tuckle some other more important matters within the ministery and do the job for what they're overpaid for doing just nothing.

Lautaro,

"No offense but, are you guys nuts? .... That's why you won't find anybody calling himself Michael Kojima or Michelle Suzuki over there."

You make a very good point, and I struggled a great deal with parallel thoughts before issuing my previous statement. I still feel strongly that being that we hold parent responsible for raising and nurturing their children, we should allow them to name them, so long as their names are not culturally offensive, pornographic or racially offensive.

I would prefer laws allowing children to divorce and sue their parents for inflicted psychological pain and suffering due to unusual names that precipitated unintended consequences and lost opportunities. As a child, I learned that "los errores se pagan con dinero". Let's allow these extreme and ignorant individuals to exercise their rights; however, let's have them pay for their transgressions with fines and/or jail time, then maybe the craziness will stop.

I agree with this idea. Although it would make it seem like our people can't learn to be proper if they're not given a "trancazo" or bled in the pockets. LOL

My cusin was named Wendy in DR, which is a common name for a man in DR. When he came to USA he was pounded from 1st grade through high school. Wendy is considered a girls name and the name of the national fast food restaurant. When he turned 18 he changed his name. I also know another guy that his first name is Kelly, he gets made fun of too.
