SANTO DOMINGO. - Warning that the universities that refuse to accept higher education Law 139-01 could be suspended, Higher Education minister Ligia A. Melo, today began the process to evaluate 35 universities and colleges.

The commission of national and international experts in charge of the evaluation of those education centers in the country was formally presented Monday, and headed by Manuel Crespo, an university professor from Montreal, Canada.

Melo said compliance with Law 139-01, that stipulates an evaluation of all universities every five years, is enforced to bolster the higher education. “The quinquennial evaluation of the professional training organizations in Dominican Republic aims to provide reliable information to the users of educative services at the superior level.”

The administrative and academic organization, curricula, human and financial resources and infrastructure, are some of the components evaluated.

Among the universities and colleges being monitored are the universities National Evangelical, Technological of the South, Fernando Arturo de Meriño, Technological Catholic of Barahona, Open for Adults and the Superior Educational Training Institute.

Melo said the evaluation process identifies and updates the weak points of the higher education institutions, and clarified that it’s the first time an external evaluation of those institutions take place.

University is a misnomer. They should be called "the grade after the last year of high school, but now smoking is permitted".

This is sad state of affairs. Secondary education in the DR is FAR SUPERIOR than in North America. I remember doing Algebra in 6th grade back in the DR. You have to wait until grade 10th or 11th to do that in the North. It’s sad that we can't bring this level of excellence to post-secondary education.

There's a marked difference when talking about public and private education in the DR. I remember the Shows that asked students which was the capital of DR and getting very few correct answers. Public education in the country is a joke.

Dozens of UNIVERSITIES?

The last time I checked there were only a handful of such institutions in the country.
Please....Let's not embellish that much...Soon we'll have to change the country's name to Cuba.

Almost half of the students don't know how to spell in Spanish. They always use the letter K where you need to use the letter Q

I can think of about 30 such institutions....the artilce says that 35 will be reviewed. Sounds like "dozens" to me...actually, sounds like about three doznes to be prceise.

Secondary education in the DR is FAR SUPERIOR than in North America, WOW! YOU MUST, MUST , MUST, BE JOKEING WITH US!.... did you loose your marbles?... their is nothing in the dr that is better then the states. many countries like india, and china, turn out millions of professionals each year from their colleges...... tell me what the dr turns out each year from their collegs?...... sorry i forgot one dominican invented the internet, others put a man on the moon, ect... come on guy wake up please.....my daughter was in high school on the north coast.... i dont think she had 2-3 hours a day of teaching..... my teacher is getting married so no school today, my teachers are sick no school today.. want me to go on?

Last time I checked most High School graduates in US and in Canada can not even read nor fill out a simple job application.
The moral of the stronger is always the better.
