SANTO DOMINGO. - The Justice Ministry today discussed behind closed doors with all prosecutors a new strategy with the press, and advised them to be careful with the media and the journalists, some of which were called “nuisances.”

Justice Ministry Communication and Protocol director Julieta Tejada advised them to be careful when responding to the press in interviews regarding their pending cases. She said they shouldn’t provide details regarding a denunciation even when the journalists are insistent.

The Justice Ministry official also urged the prosecutors to get to know the journalists and the editorial line of the media they represent before granting interviews.

Tejada questioned the press’ insistence in the search of the news and in her view many journalists are “nuisances.”

The meeting with all of the country’s prosecutors is headed by Justice minister Radhamés Jiménez.

what happened to freedom of the press? it is our duty as journalists to uncover the corruption, hate and injustice that is going on in the DR as of now. How are we going to be able to preserve any kind of democracy when our voices are silenced?

Brittany,
They are saying that some are nuisances, not all members of the press. I would never release any info to the press unless it is official.

I don't like it. This doesn't smell good to me, particularly in a country with rampant corruption at all levels. We need transparency and accountability in our govt's actions and responsible and accurate reporting by the press; in other words, we need good balance.

I have grown increasingly skeptical of all news emanating from US. Press may be just as bad as govt, and complicitous with it and its actions. We learned just yesterday in DT article about this reality.

There is nothing sacred left in DR......I can hear the clamoring for the emergence of another strong man-even from a great distance: Trujillo! Trujillo!! Trujillo!!!!

God help us all.

Letrou,

Except for matters of great national security, the govt does not have the right to remain silent, and it must be accountable to the people. Likewise for the Justice Dept, except when any disclosure would jeopardize judicial fairness against pending cases and defendants. The govt serves the people, not the other way around! Cuba and the other commie countries subscribe to the opposite view and, frankly, I rather have poor capitalism and democracy than any form of communism.
