SANTO DOMINGO. - Cardinal Nicolas de Jesus Lopez Rodriguez Thursday said when Congress approved the ban on abortion; it interpreted the feeling of the majority of the Dominican people.
After officiating a mass in the Prime Cathedral of America to mark the Electoral Central Board’s 86th anniversary, Lopez said Congress did the correct thing and rebuffed those who criticized the church’s role and its insistent position. “We understand that that’s what the Dominican people feel and it’s necessary to be in tune. What the Church has done is to interpret what the majority feels."
The prelate slammed those who say it’s a step backward for the country the Revisory Assembly’s approval of article 30, as the Executive Branch’s constitutional reform proposal defines life from conception until a natural death.
"The fact that there are countries, beginning with the United States and Europe that are legislating in favor of killing people means an enormous backward movement. "I’ll never understand how legislating to kill has ever been any progress."

Yes, I guess the cardinal knows the will of the people. God told him what the will of the people is. I mean surely the cardinal and all the religious "moral" leaders have a direct line with God and I'm sure that while God doesn't impede on a person's free will, I'm sure the "moral" leaders feel it is their right and obligation to do that which God does not do because they know better. What a joke when you have religious leaders dictating national policy....especially the catholic church which in its election of its leaders hardly embodies or reflects the only sector that's actually maintaining that church alive; the latin population. But I'm sure that's the way God wants it, I mean they have the direct line.

The catholic church in this country has an appalling record in regard to educating the young , in pastoral care and in liturgical standards ...with over 90 % of the population stating they are catholic and with less than 10 % going to church , that says something about how the people view their faith.

We all have to live with our concience. I'm one of those who firmly believe that life is sacred from the moment of conception. I have never bought into the idea that a woman can do whatever she wants with her body. The problem I see here is that we are talking about another body. I'm sure that a doctor wouldn't remove my arm just because I tell him that I don't like and I don't want it because it is deformed or whatever, but we think that we can discard an unborn child.
If we are allowed to do was we please, too many of us would certainly act like savages. We definitely need rules and laws whether we like them or not

Therefore, they (society) need a divine intervention (such as the Church) to improve their lifes. That life is in danger given that 20 million people now live in the island and more than 553,000 people are born every year in the island.
Where are the jobs, the resources (natural and human), and the space to accommodate the explosive incremental growth of more than half million people a year?
The Cardinal does not dare to answers those questions that the politician have to deal with! And yet the church demands equality and proper distribution of resources to everyone. WE MUST STOP THE INSANE SOCIALISTS IN THE CHURCH! WE MUST RETURN "CONSERVATIVE" ATTITUDES TO THE CHURCH!

Abortion should not be used as a contraceptive. People, men and women,should act more responsibly and stop killing the unborn just because it so happens that a child was created out of 5 minutes of careless sex. Why don't most men volunteer to have vasectomies? That would avoid millions of these abortions that most of you males seem to be so much for. At the same time, you can go to bed with any woman without having to worry about paying for an abortion or paying child support for at least 18 years.

No one is denying that abortion is horrible, but women are going to do it anyway. Abortions per capita in the DR are the same as in the US even though it's illegal. I just believe banning abortion even in the case of rape, incest and if the life of the mother is at risk is just going way too far. They could have at least allowed it in special circumstances. Anyway....I'm confident that this constitutional amendment will be repealed within 10-15 years when the country has a more socially liberal government.

I can understand your point, Edward, but the mayority of abortions are just as a matter of convenience, not due to rape, incest or the risk of death. The former are the ones that I personally find abominable and feel very strong against. We seem to be heading toward a society in which everything and anything goes.
