Santo Domingo.– The government of the Dominican Republic ratified the Inter-American Convention against the Illicit Manufacturing of and Trafficking in Firearms, Ammunition, Explosives and Related Materials (CIFTA) through the signature of a document by the Secretary General of the Organization of American States (OAS) José Miguel Insulza and the Permanent Representative of the Dominican Republic to the OAS Ambassador Virgilio Alcántara.

Participants in the event also included the President of the OAS Permanent Council and Permanent Representative of Canada Graeme Clark, and the Permanent Representative of Guatemala and President of the Consultative Committee of CIFTA, Jorge Skinner-Klee. The event was held in the Secretary General’s office at the OAS Headquarters in Washington, DC.

Secretary General Insulza congratulated the Dominican government on ratifying a Convention of particular importance to the Americas. “Armed violence and insecurity affect generally all our societies, worsen our citizens’ quality of life, and makes them feel permanently threatened.”

“The Convention serves the purpose of combating and eliminating the illicit manufacturing and trafficking of firearms. It particularly stresses the needs for arms control; arms confiscation; regulating authorizations and licenses for export, import and transit; and strengthening controls at export points,” said Insulza, who emphasized especially the threat of small firearms.

So what does the article translate to? That only the government and the big shots can have guns?
By the smell of this paragraph:
"stresses the needs for arms control; arms confiscation; regulating authorizations and licenses for export, import and transit; and strengthening controls at export points,”
Just looks to the plain eye as more steps towards banning firearms and citizens rights.
Another attempt at curtailing long fought for rights for private citizens, to defend and protect your premises. We have to rely on the questionable uniformed authorities to protect and defend us against evil.

Did I miss something ?
Event held at the OAS headquarters in Washington D.C ?
Not one detail mention on how it would enforce the Illegal Arms trade, more new Laws, sounds like a little too late for me.
How about a real threat to all like the current enforcement of the illegal drug trade ?
I'm all for regulating illegal firearms and explosives, but.............New laws always sound and look good on the books. How about enforcing the existing Laws first.
I'm a responsible firearms owner and collector thank GOD I never had to use one in self defense or protection of Family / property but that's because Law Enforcement in the U.S does it's part and works. Unlike in the DR where money talks or it's who you know that counts, adding no respect or confidence in DR Police. The DR should go back to the basics of Morals, Honor and the Respect of Human Life and others property's.
I MAY BE ASKING TOO MUCH or am I still in a STATE OF FANTASY.

Inquisidor,
Could it be..................The New World Order in the first stages where total Government controls and knows whats best for all, and simply ignoring the real and current problems like Drugs, Crime, Poverty, Unemployment and the basic Human needs of it's Citizens such as Food, Power and Education and a future.
Removing Human rights, needs and a chance of making it on your own and replacing it with BIG BROTHER.
WHAT A DEAL......
