Lawmakers urge ban on Mexico
SANTO DOMINGO.- Public Health minister Bautista Rojas Monday said the authorities have enough antiviral medicines and masks to confront of a possible outbreak of swine flu, and the controls at port and airport terminals have already been placed to monitor the arrival of people who could be affected.
The official also said he’ll meet with his Department’s senior officials at 2 p.m. to instruct them on the measures to adopt across the country.
Rojas spoke after he met with the members of the Epidemiology Commission for about one hour, in which participated the ministers of Agriculture, Armed Forces, Tourism, Education, and the heads of the Port Authority, Immigration, Customs, Civil Aviation Institute, Emergency Operations Center and of the Airports.
He said from now on Public Health will be the spokesman on the country’s situation.
Lawmakers request restrictions on Mexico
The deputies Victor Terrero, and Renee Canaan urged the health authorities to ban flights and products from Mexico, to prevent the spread of the virus.
The lawmakers asked the Immigration Agency and the Agriculture Ministry to establish a temporary ban on passengers and products form Mexico, while the swine flu alert is in effect.

They do not have enough medicine to deal with an outbreak.
This is the same as Segura saying the outages will be fixed shortly.

I think that DR will snatch a large amount of tourists that normally visit Mexico. If the flu stays away from DR Mexico's downturn will be good for the Dominican economy

There is absolutely no reason why the swine flu can NOT be kept out of the DR, unless it gets to Miami quickly and if there are a few cases i believe it can be contained ..the number of people coming from here from Mexico is limited and would mainly come with COPA via Panama City where there will be many precautions as there will be at the Dominican airports .
My only concern would be that the Dominican authorities would attempt to hide the fact that there was one or two cases detected ( in an effort not to damage tourism) and so would place at risk the entire population..We see so much duplicity from the information services that one more incorrect release would not be a surprise.

i do not understand much that was written here but having listened to the various authorities and experts from Cambridge University tonight on TV ; I feel very confident that we will be safe from much problem here in the DR ..well we are on an island and is easy to screen incoming passengers at the various airports and at the Puerto Rico boat terminal and there are millions of masks and I feel sure that the antiviral drugs for the virus and the antibiotics against secondary infection are all available or readily imported..Wish we were as worried about AIDS and unwanted babies as we seem to be with this Swine flu

Dear antonioj yes I was rather bemused by what that person wrote and as i said I had trouble understanding it ..but you know even today I am reading that the swine flu is relatively mild outside Mexico so I believe that if everyone is hygenic , the problem should be contained without many human losses

Well now, another case of over-reaction as far as banning PORK! Tell me, is there anyone on this island that eats raw pork? Do the pigs here come from Mexico, or are they handled by Mexican farmers here? Of course not!! Pork as long as it is cooked properly cannot cause SWINE flu...OMG, the DR Gov't definitely has a bunch of incompetants on it's hands!!!!

I was in the Domican Feb and March. I am still very sick. I don't think I have swine flu. But they do have virus in the Domican.. Heck, I would move their in a monent. and I live in Victoria. The local are so sweet.
