SANTO DOMINGO.- Customs director Miguel Cocco Monday ordered the retention of all pork meat and its derivatives as they arrive through ports, airports and border points until animal health and sanitary certificates are issued for those products from the countries of origin.
He said it’s Customs’ first measure –issued Monday morning via memo to all Customs across the country- to prevent the swine flu’s entrance to the country, after other nations reported serious outbreaks.
Cocco said Customs will authorize the retrieval of the products only after the Livestock, Agriculture and Public Health authorities issued their corresponding documents.

Are these guys nuts? Nowhere have I read that you can get this from pork products. In fact, on Fox the doc said you can not get it from pork products. It is transmitted human to human. ROFL

Well, the customs director loves the spotlight I guess.
Poor pork product importers, they are going to get slammed for new inspection fees, permits, and more red tape.

The thing is that most Dominicans will not beleive this, and if one person is sick they will blame the pork and Mr. Cocco will loose his job for not taking any action. Cocco is just protecting his job, showing the people that he cares.
They do not even have a cure for this so I do not trust the any news source. When they have a cure I will fully believe that doctors fully understand this illness.

"The H1N1 virus is a mix of human, pig and bird viruses that has epidemiologists around the world deeply concerned. The World Health Organization says the outbreak has "pandemic potential."

Using their logic, they need to ban humans, pigs, and birds. End of Story!

Is it safe to eat pork and pork products?
"Yes. Swine influenza has not been shown to be transmissible to people through eating properly handled and prepared pork (pig meat) or other products derived from pigs. The swine influenza virus is killed by cooking temperatures of 160_F/70_C, corresponding to the general guidance for the preparation of pork and other meat".
"For the ongoing outbreak of the swine influenza infection in the United States and Mexico, the national and the local authorities are recommending to use oseltamivir or zanamivir for treatment of the disease based on the virus’s susceptibility profile".
This custom director is incompetent, poor advised or trying to created a food shortage; you decided:Hope he don't stop the entry of oseltamivir and zanamivir.

Don't be so hard on Mr Cocco. There are other countries, such as Russia, China and Ukraine, that have banned imports of pork and pork products from Mexico and some U.S. states.
Indonisia banned ALL pork imports.

Yes the EU is advising against travel to the US and Mexico. Perhaps the DR as preparation should set up a couple of quarantine hotels for arrivals from the US. It seems strange that the US airlines don't stop travel to and from affected areas. US criminals did not stop the spread of HIV from the US - it is up to other countries such as the EU to come up with sensible precautions. DR could advise against travel to US. Banning all fresh products from the US and quarantining all imports and passenger arrivals.for one week would seem sensible. Of course CUBA thanks to sensible controls has one of the lowest HIV infection rates in the Caribbean. But the fascist US woild prefer that one million people die that the profits of the airlines suffer. And medical help for Mexico - forget it!

this is a good news! no matter if it's a human-human transmition is good that we are seeing more care from our authorities! , and this is also a good way to prevent and initiate plans to secure that the products we buy are safe to eat!

That's the Dominican way. You can't get swine flu from eating pork.
From: Dominican Republic, PROUD & Glad to have a Spanish last name and ancestry
Is pork the only meat product? As far as I concern growing up my family hardly had pork. How about goat, duck, cow, fish, and chicken.
This is a new strain of the swine virus. The problem is not eating pork, the problem is the handling. You could get it by handling or touching a product that has the virus and touching your nose lips eyes with dirty hands with the virus.
Remember viruses mutate becoming stronger. Some say virus can survive hundreds of years. So why not to take precausions.
