Washington. - The U.S. undersecretary of State for Hemispheric affairs said the rise in violence in Dominican Republic stems from an increase in the operations by drug cartels which seek to expand their presence in the country, aside from using it as a bridge to Europe and his country.
Thomas Shannon compared this situation to what’s happening in Mexico and Venezuela, and blamed the latter of not applying the necessary controls to keep Colombian drug from reaching Hispaniola.
It’s not the first time Washington blames Venezuela of being permissive with drug trafficking, but until now no U.S. official had spoke of drug trafficking’s gravity and expansion in Dominican territory.
“For a long time the Mexican cartels were concentrated only in the logistics of transport to the USA, but soon they realized that they could make money selling in Mexico; it’s just like what’s happening in Dominican Republic,” Shannon said.
“It’s no longer only the drug transport through a country. The cartels have realized that they can pass it and sell retail,” the official said in an interview for newspaper Listin Diario.
Recognizing the gravity of the topic, the U.S. Government’s main regional official said his country plans to increase the antidrug aid to Dominican Republic, which the U.S. Congress has already included, through the Plan Merida, to confront drug trafficking.
Shannon said this shows the U.S. legislators’ concern with the drug flow that’s occurring in Hispaniola.
Of the planned 165 million dollars in aid, only 5 million correspond to Dominican Republic. “We recognize that it is little, but this is better than nothing,” the diplomat said.

This is excellent news if it does become reality, because the DR has been lucky so far that drug consumption has not reached alarming levels.
The trend of drug traffickers now to pay their "mules" in drugs instead of cash, forces them to market the drugs in the Dominican territory, thus increasing the demand.
Glad that we will be getting more aid, we are getting peanuts as far as money now, how much more is "an increase" going to be? We need SUBSTANTIAL resources to slow this scourge.

The US cannot resolve their own drug problem. It only becomes worse with the years and the money which is spent on it. The above comment by Gregory2626 is most on target. The unbridled corruption and complicity of the powers brings about a greater risk to never controlling drugs than do the drugs themselves. It is a sorry condition within the DR.

You guys seem to be missing the point: The U.S is the largest consumer of illicit drugs. As long as there is a demand for it; traffickers will find a way to satisfy that demand. In addition to that, the US spends U.S $100billion a year to fight the so-called war on drugs. From: Dominican Republic, Cabarete
The difficulty with the US system is that most of the jails are occupied with drug users/abusers and not the real "kingpins". Those folks buy attorneys who manage, for the most part, to work the evidence and keep them out of jail before getting in. The DR system just makes the payments direct to the authorities instead of the attorneys. Neither system works, of course. Legalizing some of the product will help but understanding the underlying issues for the continued use of drugs is the approach. Same as dealing with the results of the actions and not the causes. Education/morals/ethics/values/family/and all the good stuff go a long way to reduce drug involvement. Not an easy fix by any means and with any amount of money. Unfortunately an infusement of millions to the DR for drug enforcement will only make a few people wealthier and not fix the problem.

TRY READING THE TRUTH BEHIND AMERICA'S DRUG WAR....sic
How the CIA Created the Crack Epidemic
Revolutionary Worker #873, September 15, 1996
In the early 1980s, a new drug, crack cocaine, appeared on the streets--at a time when many youth in the inner city were being forced into the underground economy in order to survive. New burdens were being added onto the poor. In a situation of intolerable poverty, unemployment, lousy health care, falling apart schools and crumbling housing, the spread of crack cocaine brought intensified conflicts between street organizations and the painful desperation of people addicted to the pipe. The government launched brutal new invasions by the police--a so-called "war on drugs"-- using the spread of crack as an excuse.
