Santo
Domingo.– The Ministry of Tourism, trough its Resolution 87-2009, has
prohibited the use of jet skis and any type of motorboats, as well as horses
and any type of equipment that might put beachgoers at risk during the Easter break.
The ministries of Environment,
Tourism and the National Board of Beautification reported that 68 beaches and
96 swimming areas had been cleaned up for the vacationers before Easter Week.
Nicolas de Jesus Cardinal Lopez Rodriguez called on Dominicans to cherish the
Christian message of the Holy Week and avoid excesses.

Somehow I would rather have horses on the beach, than most of the "Idiots" that come and play, only to leave all their garbage behind. That is of course, horses without riders. I have yet to understand how people can mess up a lovely beach by leaving glass/plastic behind after their picnic. It is a trait of most Dominicans who caravan to beaches for Semana Santa, no matter what their social status may be.

Juango,
That is not unique to the DR. Most S.A. Countries treat the beaches the same way.
From: United States
LIttering is a trait comes from a lack of education and lack of respect for nature.

Here the solution : Bann the dominicans from all the beaches.

Tex & Veronica, I understand what you are saying. My issue is, whenever these same Dominicans visit beaches in South Florida, Miami Beach, Key Biscayne, the Florida Keys or any other beach in the USA, they dont do this ! Same happens on the highway. They will throw garbage out of their Range Rover window on Av. Las Americas or Duarte, but never from their rented car on I-95. Go figure. It is basic education. I will never understand that mentality...sorry..

Juan,
They don't do it here in USA because they don't want to pay the fine...
From: United States
exactly, xwill. in the USA , if you pee off a cop, he will give you as summons for throwing a cigarette butt out your window. littering is frowned upon in that country. in Canada, it is even worse. an acquaintane of mine dropped a cigarette butt on an Ottawa street, and an elderly lady stuck him in the side with her umbrella, demanding he pick it up.

The only thing that I leave on the side of the road is the empty bottles of presidente, since I know that someone pick it up and get cash for them.

Jet Skies and Horses?
How about Beer and Rum? Or is that OK with the Holy Week?
Alchohol yes, Horses no.
Big speakers in Jeeps, yes, Horses No?
Loud music in Colmlados, drunk people, yes, Horses, No?
WTF?

I must say that GOV started with some road reparations (read very few) in Bavaro.
So, the Hoyo, has new asphalt, now all the access to the drug cartels in Hoyo is easy for Drug addicts.
Road to Macao beach is a Holes Road (not a aHoly Road, but the road with the holes), can be used for the Golf game with the sizes of the balls as for the basketball....
Come on

Xwii: You are absolutely correct, it comes down to the enforcement of these laws. If people can get it away with it they will liter because of their lack of respect for nature.
People always liter on the beaches and on the malecon. I have always wondered why the malecon area is so dirty. I think that the Dominican government can gain a lot of from enforcing these laws, especially in this area. I have always envisioned the future of el malecon being a bit like ocean drive is in Miami.

But the tickets are also not enforced in DR. This guy in Santiago got a traffic ticket and has come in an out of DR without paying it. You would think that they would charge him when he passes immigration...

I would love to see horses on the beach! The jet skies.. very loud and obnoxious. Should be designated areas only.
As far as hearing some people litter in the DR, the govt should begin a campaign to educate the citizens on basic respect for their island, and to impose fines on those who DO litter. A dirty beach would give a VERY negative impact on any visitor to the DR - it does show ignorance, disrespect and lack of education and values.

xwill7, i almost always find myself agreeing with you...this time it's about the President (light, for me thanx) bottles on the side of the road. i leave them there for passersby to take for cash, but nothing else. i like to call it "giving back!" actually the first time i chucked one outta the window, my family applauded! it was a rite of passage for me, i guess.

LOL,
Presidente is the best. I don't know why people waste their time drinking miller. Miller is a cheap beer in USA and the sell it at a higher price in DR.

Keeping horses and arm and legs cutting jet ski away from the crowded beaches in DR, specially during Semana Santa is a good idea; lesson learn from last year.

when walking on the beach dont step in the horse puckey and have a nice safe Easter
From: United States, Howard Beach N.Y
the problem is that the authorities are to blame as well if they had a bigger presence around those touristic areas maybe , just maybe people would behave better and not litter, also make sure that they hand out tickets, or worst case scenario, lock'em up, in DR cops are known to lock people up just for you looking at them the wrong way, DIGO YOOOO.!!

Horses should never be allowed on beaches. I've never seen a horse on a beach before, I guess they do that for tourists, but I can just imagine the mess they leave behind.

If you have some money in DR, Semana Santa is the perfect time to Show off with a jet ski.... and accident happens when jet ski get close and innocent citizen get injured, I agreed with the government called.

Keep the horses out forever (horse's dump are full of E-coli) and fuel carrying vehicles out forever (they leak fuel and in an accident could create fire and/or explosive conditions).

very sane observations, letroudeballe. with all the unnecessary watercraft leaking crap into the waters, soon there will be no marine life to speak of. we really do not need these idiotic things in the tropics. i have more than one friend who has died on one. let the nitwits in Miami keep them, for Christ sake.

The problem with horses on the beach is in the feces left behind which, in the sand or otherwise, breeds e coli, salmonella and other contagious disease!
So does garbage.
We should remember that, as a courtesty to each other and the enviroment, EVERYONE who uses the beaches should have to celan up after themselves.

Give me a break no horses on the beach? It is okay that people get blasted and act like retards and have loud music all day. Something horrible always happens in DR this holy time of the year WHY? People should just chill out and stop the B.S. I love music and fun until a certain level not to put me or others in jeopardy. That is why people from other countries flock to DR for all of the corruption that happens there!

Santo Domingo.
