Santo Domingo. – A National District court Monday morning convicted former Mercantil bank president Andres Aybar to five years in prison for embezzling RD$8.6 billion from that organization, the country’s third largest bank fraud case.

Aside from the prison sentence, 1st Collegiate Court judges Izmir Méndez, Felipe de Jesus Molina and Tania Yunes fined Aybar one million pesos, and sentenced him to pay 20 million pesos to the Central Bank for damages.

Moreover, the failed bank’s ex vice-president Evelyn Perez Montandón was sentenced to three years in prison and fined 500,000 pesos, whereas the other five implicated in the Mercantil case were acquitted for lack of evidence.

Aybar joins the former heads of the failed banks Bancredito, Manuel A. Pellerano and Baninter, Ramon Baez Figueroa at Najayo prison, where they were sentenced to spend 10 years each.

Josean

the 21 million is only for "damages" the 8.6 billion gets seized from which ever account they are at that how the process works. I'm surprises that they got this much time in a country where 30 yrs is the max penalty. I glad they are in jail now. i thought the same thing you do a while ago but after researching found out that money is not lost because all these banks work in connection so they know where money goes all the time is just a matter of time to get it back. Bank frauds are like idenitoty theft here in USA the punishment is not that hard because most of the damages is reversable.

Belly,

Maybe thats the case, but what about the earnings and opportunities they possibly availed themselves with the use of that 8.6 billion? It still seems like a good deal for these former "upstanding members of society!"

Forgive me for being a skeptic, but something doesn't seem quite right about changes in forum content and depth of discussions. Forum has become lame and uninteresting, and some contributors either have gotten lobotomized or work for DT outright-maybe they always did!!!!

Where in heck is Generoso and the real Josean? GC, we know he was silenced, but I miss his contributions. Dr. Dread-very incisive, eloquent and level-headed. Ciby-didn't always agree with him, but generally right on. abc, just hope he will get totally banned or exiled to Cuba!!!! Guy makes absolutely no sense and is either a communist or a too far leftist. No big loss here.

I am quickly losing interest in forum....Please go back to the old ways with more intellectually deep discussions.

Anybody knows of another forum out there with more interesting discussions? Please let me know, because I cannot take this lameness and lack of intellect much longer.

Thanks.

Are you kidding me 5 yrs this is slap in the face to all the Dominican people. A high power executive steals hundreds of millions of peso you get 5 yrs. A person who has no job and can't feed his starving children steals a pollo they want to give him 20 yrs. Is this Justice!!

Molotov,

I make no assumption as to FredC's identity until he himself indicates that he is indeed GC. Best of my knowledge, he has not indicated publicly that he and GC are one and the same. There are obvious similarities in style and content of messages, but that's all we could really say.

I, for one, appreciate both of them and enjoy their commentaries, and think forum is better for it.

He will never do the 5 yrs. I'll give him 8-12 months and he'll out. Money talks, folks. You all keep forgetting that. It is all a big show. I know a case (two years ago) where a Canadian was poisened (killed and autopsy was conclusive) for his personal goods (he was in a coma) and an investigation was not even opened ! The only justice in the DR, is the one that is paid for. and even this it is not always delivered. El pais de las Maravillas.

No Freddy, but they could have tried on others (selling organs) . His internal organs where all shot from the Rat Poison that was fed to him by his caretakers (a Doctor and a lawyer who are brothers). The pathology lab in SD did the required autopsy and results were documented. That is what I wanted to say. After his death, I decided to leave the DR after many years of living in what was once a Paradise. The caretakers did end up with many of his personal possessions. My friend was single (no family) and wealthy.
