SANTO DOMINGO.- The National District Prosecutor decided to drop the charges against the extraditable Ernesto Bienvenido Guevara Díaz (Maconi), accused of laundering money from narcotics trafficking, a move aimed at paving the way for his extradition to New York.

 

Guevara has also been accused of preparing and transporting the 1,387 kilos de cocaine seized from the ex Army captain Quirino Paulino on December, 2004, the country’s biggest ever drug bust.

 

Mientras que la Suprema Corte de Justicia declaró inadmisible un recurso de casación en contra de la sentencia que anula el descargo del imputado y ordena una nueva valoración de las pruebas en su contra.

 

Prosecutor Alejandro Moscoso asked the Collegiate Court to discard the accusation against Guevara, arguing that the decision aims to pave the way to seek an indictment into more serious and relevant crimes.

 

Moreover, Guevara has another process pending in New York’s South District Court, which has asked for his extradition, while the Supreme Court’s Penal Chamber has yet to rule on that request against the accused now being held at Najayo prison.
