Santo Domingo.- A senator of the opposition PRD party yesterday confirmed the reports on the agreement between president Leonel Fernandez and that party’s ex presidential candidate Miguel Vargas.

Mario Torres affirmed that all legislators who support Vargas had knowledge of the agreement, whose condition is that the Head of State doesn’t seek reelection to the post in 2012.

Newspaper El Nacional yesterday reported that Fernandez and Vargas had agreed to eliminate the "never again" clause in the new Constitution.

Senator Torres (Dajabon) said the agreement isn’t limited to the constitutional reform, as it includes other aspects which he didn’t specify.

He blamed opposition PRSC party deputy Ramon Rogelio Genao of being "disrespectful and a liar," by accusing Vargas of “courting” his party’s legislators. “The reformists have neither moral nor political quality to criticize the agreement between Fernandez and Vargas."

Ruling party rebellion

After yesterday’s political bombshell detonated afternoon radio talk shows were saturated by calls from politicians of the various parties wanting to comment on the reports.

In that regard, ruling PLD party deputy Alejandro Montas said his colleague legislators will defend “their space” and called on Fernandez to respond to the reports.

"We in the Assembly Revisory have assumed the defense of the constitutional reform with responsibility and we are confident and enthusiastic and that the reform is approved and we must also be valued such as the PRSC party,” he said in reference to Fernandez’s meetings with that party’s leadership, reportedly also aimed at reaching political agreements.

These guys don't need to be invited to abuse their positions. The desire to abuse their positions is a prerequisite for seeking political office.

Leonel, Presidente for life. Pa'lante que vamos! It looks like Leonel is clearing the way for a run at 3rd term. But wouldn't this take an amendment to the Constitution? Talk about abuse of power and usurping the legislative process. Can't wait to see the fall out from this.

This guy learns Dominican history and politics as he goes along. Everyone knows this is GC, and GC idolizes Trujillo so why are you against him or dictatorship now?
