Leonel Fernández with king Juan Carlos I, in the Zarzuela Palace today.
MADRID. - President Leonel Fernandez on Monday warned that the drug trafficking affecting Latin America requires a global solution because in his view no country can solve it alone, and asked the United States to reduce its demand. "No country can solve it alone, it must always be in cooperation with others, because it has cross-border character, is a crime of a transnational character.”
“The country which can cooperate most is the United States, because the demand takes place in the United States. We can control the supply, but they must control the demand, and I believe that president (Barak) Obama’s current attitude and of his administration is to recognize this and to look for an integral solution," Fernandez said, interview by EFE. “If we advanced in this direction, we can be effective, as shown for example, by the application of the Plan Colombia".
The Dominican President, whose on official visit in Spain, said that drug traffickers move from one country when they are challenged, in reference to Colombia, “and this is happening in Mexico, which reinforces the idea that the fight needs to be waged jointly.”
"Therefore it’s necessary to fight it in Mexico, to fight it in Colombia, to fight it in Guatemala, all of Central America, Haiti and Dominican Republic, so that we can overcome this threat," the chief executive said.

This guy is starting to make comments as stupid as Mejia used to make. obviously the demand has to be reduced, but it sure would be a lot easier if the supply were not so plentiful. How about if his majesty (oops, excuse me, President Fernandez) tried to eliminate the many corrupt Army, Air Force, Police, and Naval officers who are facilitating the trans shipment of drugs across our borders?

Hey Fred, América is the name of my CONTINENT, it is NOT the name of a single country is this CONTINENT. Also, this is not directed at you Fred, but at our president: I wonder if the president is going to ask the King to admit other non-iberoamerican nations like Jamaica, Dominica, etc. into the organization, because they were once spanish colonies before they were english or french colonies, just like he wants done for Haiti.

I agreed that to get rid of drug traffickers it's going to take a joined effort; however, DR should not be so quick in blaming the US for its drug problems. Keep in mind that the driving source is MONEY... one has it the other one doesnt.

JuanB, Thanks for your comment above.
I think Sec. Clinton is well aware of the two-faced nature of RD Gov officials (after all Captain Paulino is in a NY prison). Thus, she should inform the President not to be too soft on the RD Prez regarding demands.

Is this guy collecting "Frequent Flyer" mileage or what? It seems to me that every time I read DT this guy is traveling to some far away place. His level of travel is totally not commensurate with his level of importance in world arena.
Perhaps it is a good thing he is traveling. That way, perhaps he mortgages our country just a little less. I am concerned, however, about he re-offering DR to the Spaniards as an extension of their country-the nerve! Man, he should probably be tried for treason for making such an idiotic and unpatriotic statement.
If DR were to vote for this guy one more time, then they really deserve the govt and system they get. Perhaps they should consider senator Williams for vice-president; they would deserve that as well.

I agree the US should concentrate on demand reduction because working with supposedly partner nations like th DR isn't working but instead increasing the flow of drugs to the US while wasting millions of dollars. The corruption that permeates the Dominican government and the lack of political will to stop it makes a permissive environment for drug traffickers and turning the DR economy into a drug financed economy. If you ain't with em your against em! and the DR has proven to be an unreliable partner in the figh against drugs.

Sorry to be boring but I will stick to the subject ..the USA is the biggest drug user in the world and the largest supplier of weapons to latin america which places that country in a position where it must take a large responsibility for the misery caused by drug trafficing ..it can do this in many ways but cross border co operation is essential until the demand is curtailed
