Santo Domingo.– Dominican
Republic has again been included in an annual US list of the world's worst intellectual property rights (IPR) violators.
Dominican Republic is among 33 countries on a lower level watch list that comprises countries which merit bilateral attention to address
underlying intellectual property right problems.
Some of the other countries on the list include: Colombia, Costa Rica, Ecuador,
Jamaica, Kuwait, Lebanon, Malaysia, Mexico, Saudi Arabia, Spain, Ukraine and
Vietnam.
In a statement, US Trade Representative Ron Kirk said countries should continue
to observe copyright rules even amid a global economic downturn.
The "Special 301" report also underlined "continuing serious concerns" in China and
Russia, both of which were maintained on the blacklist despite "some
evidence of improvement" on copyright protection in both countries.
"I am particularly troubled by reports that Chinese officials are
urging more lenient enforcement of IPR laws, motivated by the financial
crisis and the need to maintain jobs. China needs to strengthen its approach to IPR protection and enforcement, not weaken it," Kirk said.
President Barack Obama's administration, according to the report, was also seeking improvements to the intellectual property regime in Russia.

The Dominican Republic has far more serious problems to take care of than violating intellectual rights. Until the biggest problem (corruption) is brought down to more realistic levels anything else you try to do in the country is a waste of time.

Bravo Belly!! But there is no one willing to make the sacrifice so the status quo will remain. Lots of talk in the DR but NO action. So dream on and watch and the politicians make themselves richer while driving the country into the dirt relying on IMF loans that they can't pay back.

Belly your comments about corruption and that the people need to take responsibility for ending rampant aforesaid ....But if the choices in the polling booth are from the same herd of hacks you will always be in a circle of corruption vicious and otherwise ....Maybe Jackie Chan was correct I hope not ! The electorate must demand better choices and at a minimum get to the " You can fool some of the people all of the time " proverb Stage of Democracy before the concept of copyright protection will make any sense .The copyright or patent process to someone against globalization is all part of the chains of Globalization .....GO FIGURE !
