NEW YORK.- Members of New York’s Dominican community sent a letter to president Leonel Fernandez today, to request the repeal of the permits to build a cement plant near the Los Haitises National Park (northeast).
The Dominicans tell the chief executive that they agree with the Chamber of Deputies Environment Commission advice to the Environment Ministry, to void the permits issued to the company Consorcio Minero Dominicano to build the plant.
The letter affirms that the various studies found that the construction of a cement plant in the area " is not only detrimental to the flora, the fauna, the ground and the aquifers of the Dominican Republic’s most important environmental lung, but it’s also a serious threat to the health and quality of life of the tens of thousands of the regions’ inhabitants."
"The sons and friends of Sabana Grande de Boyá, Gonzalo, Monte Plata, Bayaguana, Yamasá, Peralvillo, Los Botados, Chirino, Las Taranas, Majagual, El Rodeo, Los Limones and the other nearby communities reject the intention of the business group which seeks to suffocate us with the dust from that cement plant," says the letter to Fernandez.

"Consorcio Minero Dominicano"....... how the hell did this company apply for a permit to do this in that area. Based on all the other Cement plants in DR, the owners should have there heads buried in cement.

This is a very good news. Los Haitises should protected now and in the future. I had a chance to go there and is amazing how naturally beautiful this area is. I'm glad the UASD got involve and now Dominicans outside are getting involve too. I wish more groups get together and take this kind of actions to let the gov know that because they are outside doesn't meant they don't care about what happens in DR. Very good move once again and i hope other big communities like Boston and Florida take the same steps. I wish i could do it locally but the community here in Houston,Texas is very small. I also hope that if the permit gets revoke we should conduct a investigation of who and what are the reason for approving such crazy permit that if successful would not just affect the area but the whole country. Bring the responsible to justices for committing such a evil move.

Very well done! Now if only the Haitians would do the same things for their country they'd be better off!

Belly,
The amount of Dominicans here in Houston is actually quite large, difference is they do not all live in one area. El Torrito (Hector Acosta) had a concert here 2 years ago and the place was packed, 1000's of jeans with white belts and shoes. More than you think there are.

A noble effort indeed, unfortunately "Money" is thicker than "Blood" in the DR. I hope the Pueblo will raise up in protests and do something. LF is not invincible !

This is actually funny. This is a failed state becasue you Dominicans vote these same people into office then complain about it. Then you vote them in again and then complain about it:)
I love the Dominicans who are sucking off the TIT of the US and complaining here also. Truely incredible. Same people also complain about the Hatians invading:)

The experience around the world with cement plant should be part of the environment friendly into account and my point of view is why they do not look for another place at Dominican Republic such as Jimani have plenty of the same raw material good for a cement plant, and in the same way contribute with the big problem with have with the frontier, my suggestion is go close to the frontier as experiment plan ahead because there are so many element in consideration for a Cement Plant Environment, Energy, Water, Pollution, Big area more than 400 Acres for the exploitation of Mine, Air Contamination, Finally What the government is doing with all those technician bureaucratic this is common sense.

There also may be plans to build a small ship/barge dock near this plant site inorder to transport production to the Arroyo Barril/Port Duarte (existing large dock-not used much). This would facilitate export of production. If this is so, where would that small dock be built/located? The shoreline in that area is an eco-treasure !!!

I alway think they should built such industry along the border. That is the best place to built a cement plant, not in an ecological sensitive area like the Haitiases. Why are they picking near the Haitises to buit a cement plant when there are so much wasted land near the border?? Why??

popon, the plant site would be located near raw material source, access & egress ease, proximity to potential construction growth areas (Samana Penn. and East Coast Miches to Pt Cana) and infrastructure (utilities & roads). I would not be surprised if LF himself, does not have his hand directly/indirectly into the Parent Company of this plant. He or his shadow company are most probably partners in this venture, much like he did for the old Cogentrix Power Plant in SPM. Corruption at its finest, Dominican Style. Personally, I would NOT be able to live with myself, if I did such a thing, but then again, I am not like most Dominicans and LF is.

Juango, I too would not be able to live with myself, if I did such thing.
But you know the saddest thing is that LF grew up in New York, he knows that NYC is the greatest city when it comes to infrastructure planning and developing, their planning is for the future 10 to 20 years. He knows that a city needs to plan for twenty years ahead, not just for a presidential term, but again, this is Dominican.

There's a monster project slated for the Miches area. A group has and still is buying square KM. of land to build a cyber city. Check it out. They need a facility like this and for the material to arrive by water is a big advantage. Transportation unions can't touch the product, move it or block it's movement.

Leonel will be known for destroying our national parks. First LF allowed the illegal to mutilate the Ozorio national park and now, LF permits the destruction of the Haitises! BLOCK LF FROM Destroying the Haitises and contaminating the acquifer!

Let's stop "la politiqueria" and make serious comments. There was a concrete factory by the Ozama River at the end of Maximo Gomez Avenue for over 50 years. That area was a disaster and many communities surrounded this facility. ¿Where in the hell a concrete factory is not going to cause negative impact to the environment? First of all, if the construction of this factory is located outside the limits set forth by law, the only thing the government has to deal with is to have this company take the necessary steps to protect the environment, to protect the lives of the communities that may be affected and to put controls and regulations. I passed by these facilities and found no threads other than the usual for this type of industry. Let progress ride, otherwise, our people will stay ignorant. These kinds of thing awaken the people. Some comments insults the intelligence of Quisqueyans.

CONSTITUTION.... YOU PASSSSSSST! Next time stay there for at least 6 months, and tell us if the "necessary steps" are being applied, and of course is the landscape still green or a pretty white ash colored.
