Washington.– Four Caribbean countries, including the Dominican Republic, have been identified as potential transit points for terrorists by the U.S. government.

The Dominican Republic, Trinidad and Tobago, Jamaica and the CARICOM nation of Belize were all identified as areas of possible terror risks in the Western Hemisphere in the latest 'Country Reports on Terrorism.'

The Dominican Republic made the report because U.S. authorities say the country is considered a transit point for suspected terrorists and extremists to Europe, Africa, and within the Western Hemisphere.

"Despite good intentions, the Dominican government lacked the ability to control its air, land, and sea borders fully, due in part to corruption and the mismanagement of resources," states the 2009 report. "While many land border, freight, and airline hubs remained permeable."

Jamaica's proximity to the United States, well developed sea lanes and air links, and the transit of over two million travelers annually between the United States and Jamaica make the country a potential transit point for terrorists, states the 2009 report, released Thursday.

It also cited the fact that the country is sparsely populated and has limited human and technological resources to monitor individuals and groups residing within or transiting through its borders.

Before all you natives of theDominican Republic begin to rationalize this article into oblivion, consider EXACTLY what is implied and reported.
The facts are there for all to see.

We have a corrupt National Police Force, for the most part, although some effort to cleanse the image and the system is evident.

The Government Judicial system is rampant with corruption to the point of "almost failing", if we are to believe all the periodical reports that have been published. The implications are there for all to see.

Concentration of monetary allocations to operating agencies is limited by the Government's propencity to place such into visible accomplishments instead into elements which foster advancement of the society.

There are many other examples, but all of you are aware of the failings of the Government you live under.

THINK ABOUT IT!!!

Bill, I guess corruption is absent in US governance and politics. Don't play yourself...

Bill, you might be right! But, if this is true, they should also report that the US is the main source of terrorist activities in the Hemisphere. The actions of the US government and the platform it provides for the free movement well-know internatinal terrorists mains the US a source of this type of criminal activities. Do you want me to type a list criminal protected by the US government? I guess is not necessary.

The report is unfair and put DR in a league in which we have never played before. Is it possible that a terrorist travel to the US via DR? Yes, everything is possible. But the facts indicate that they prefer Londo, Paris, Germany and other first world ports of departure. Isn't it true?

ammit, read the opening sentence of my post!
Already, you have begun to rationalize the OP with counter rationale.
Why thehell don't you just accept what the DR is and let it go at that.
I am the first to recognize the common failings of the US Gvbernment and the Administrations that control it every 4 years.
Reports of this type are generated to aid and assist OTHER Governments to recognize where and when they have the simelance of a problem relative to ongoing operations. They are not designed, nor intended to be a "finger-pointing" criticism of the country(ies) by any means.
Just pull in your horns, READ AND DIGEST the article, then ask yourself, "Where cand how an we do better".
Frankly, I don't really give a damn what you do or don't do, just accept your responsibilities andquit rationalizing them out the window as you commonly do.

Put That in your confounded pipe and smoke it.

The real problem may be how the US now views anyone/country who is opposed to abortion...this may be an attack because they can't control the DR, yet.

Is there anyone reading this article that does not believe that terrorists who are willing to pay cannot do whatever they want here? Regardless of where there are other problems, there is certainly a HUGE PROBLEM here.

The second intelligent respnse to this article, the first coming from TB.

The rest should be glad the US has offered this information so the countries mentioned , can start to improve their security. Wasn't it just a few weeks ago when disturbed young man held a passenger jet and everyone on it hostage? For crying out loud he walked on the plane with a loaded gun. Just imagine what could have happened if this was a planned hi-jacking by terrorists.

The US was attacked because we got lazy and didn't react to intelligence reports that were right in front of us.
The ones just waiting for a chance to pounce on the US should take a step back and think before you react so foolishly.

I agree with this report and I hope that the D.R. starts taking security more seriously. This is not an attack on the DR, it's a wake-up call.

Thank God there are SOME OF YOU who are not knee-jerking this article into oblivion.

The propencity of Dominicans to complascently view world events and threats is very demoralizing and disheartening to me.
I would think that an article of this type would shake them up just a little bit instead of fostering such rationalizations as are presented near the opening of the comments hereto.
Maybe it will take an attack on the DR proper in order to wakethese people up.
I certainly hope it doesn't happen, because the coutry just isn't prepared for such an event with the thinking represented above.

Attaboy! Texas Bill, you are 100% right on point! We should just take the article for what it says and deal with it. Many guys can not see the forest for the trees (i.e. confusing this issue with abortion). JuanB is also on point, because given a corrupt society as the DR; it is key when "money talks". Keep in mind, there is only 60 miles of ocean between PR and DR (whereas these potential terrorist can buy a 1st class sail boat and cruise into American soil to the PR and fly from there to any key points on the mainland). Remember, these fools have money to burn from years of high oil prices.

Prez LF already got a forewarning of this along with the drug trafficking issues during the recent visit from Clinton. Since that recent visit local drug raids have increased significantly but without the Clinton visit this would not have happened due to the "play to pay" system in the RD.

Only effect the report may have:
DR Customs and Immigration will wake up to the value of the traffic they were letting through for small change and start to charge real mordida.
That's not all bad. The greedy stupids will keep upping the ante to where their customers assassinate them. Younger guys take over their posts, the game continues, and eventually they're all gone.

This article in no way indicates that the DR is assisting terrorist activities or knowingly supporting them. It only states that it can be used as a "TRANSIT POINT" meaning that they can easily enter the DR and thereby more easily enter the U.S. Obviously, if the DR can be used as a transit point for drugs, illicit cash, and illegal aliens it can be used for terrorists. Just because the US puts out a report on potential terrorist transit points does not make the report a personal slam against other countries. It's part of trying to identify potential threats and mitigat them before they're a problem. Furthermore, just because the U.S. has various problems and failures of it's own does not mean that the information they provide is inaccurate/wrong. Half the world is busy critisizing the U.S. for everything they do, but none of those countries are perfect or have governments free of corruption either. People should really evaluate the info before getting their panties in a wad

As long as the U.S. uses the word "TERRORIST" to either directly or indirectly implicate or refer to a particular country by name, don't take it lightly. This is very serious stuff. Don't try to sugar coat it.

Why did the U.S. choose DR and not Haiti, the neighbor? Maybe because there was some tension beteween Hillary and Leonel during Hillary's visit. Don't just downplay the godzzilean significance of this label. BE VERY CAREFUL!

Boy it will really suck for the US if the terrorist where actually smart and tried to plant themselves in the caribbean islands and planned for attack. In a country where in a day you can change your documentation and identity, yeah, what a problem. Boy oh boy, Leonel Fernandez need to be booted out of office it is time for someone younger, better and non- party affiliated.

actually, i am inclined to take the road less travelled, in this case. the terrorists are not dimwits. some are pretty smart. they figured out that the aforementioned countries are the most likely routes to be taken by terrorists, just like the americans did. ergo, while the US and other institutions expend their vigilance trying to minimise the efficacy of these countries as transit conduits, the terrorists might just slip in through other countries which are receiving less attention.

I agree with TexasBill, i also disagree with you,,most transient point come from Europe and Canada..but you right with need to upgrade our security and keep corruption to a managerable lever. Dominican Republic need better aircraft for the Air force and the Navy need shit capable of tracking target far away, as well cabable personal

i have no idea with whom Telemeco disagrees , but, if it is with me, i respect his right so to do. i just believe that surprise is good. so, since the police are always looking for young black and hispanic males to transport drugs, the drug boys sometimes use nice old caucasian housewives. after all, the cops would not suspect little middle aged women who should be home baking coconut macaroons, would they?

Hey Bernstein! These Pirates of the Caribbean (Pirates: the new enemies of the world) have nothing to do with oil; thier money is made the old fashion way: Selling And Transporting Drugs around the Globe....Like the East India Company did with Opium, you know? The Boxer wars and all that Jazz!

So, these new fangled-new world Pirates are of the French Connection Variety, Shalom Aleihum!

They come from Europe, the old Soviet block, from Israel, from Colombia, from Mejico, from Bronfman's Canada, and the DEA's US of A. Oy Vey, all these schmucks love palm trees and easy money........
With little scrutiny from the local authorities you too can make a bundle....Pirate's Paradise....
Want to come a get a "Bain de Soleil" tan? The natives are friendly and accept anyone!
