Santo Domingo.- Chanting slogans rebuking the imminent constitutional ban on most types of abortion, thousands of women marched on Congress Wednesday, to protest against the assembly members who would vote for the measure.

“What we want with this great march is to ask the Revisory Assembly to rectify article 30 of the new Constitution,” said Sergio Galván, director of the Woman and Health Collective.

She said the controversial article “threatens the life of women, violates her consecrated human rights already, limits the exercise of the medical professional class, and the access to contraceptive methods.”

Representatives of hundreds of organizations, grouped in the movement National Constitutional Retrograde Resistance Coordinator, marched to the Congress to rebuke the Revisory Assembly’s approval, in a first roll call, of the controversial amendment.

In the new Constitution Article 30 would establish: “the right to life is inviolable from conception to death. “Capital punishment will neither be established, nor pronounced nor applied in any case.”

“Article 30 constitutes an social backward movement incompatible with the constitution, called to guide the men and women of this country towards the future of prosperity, justice and fairness, for which this nation has suffered and fought for as well,” states the protesters’ document handed  to a commission of legislators.

Congratulations for your efforts! Let us see if this Congress listens and cares about its citizens. Hopefully they will listen and your time has not been wasted as it has been in the northern yankee part of this hemisphere. I pray this nation survives and exist for the benefit of the people who inhabit it and does not go to waste like the USA. Show the world you still have a true democracy and not false one. Continue to fight for your rights before you lose them as the USA has. Then it will be too late for you. Fight! Fight! Fight! Or give up and live in the misery of the USA.

At last I see some reporting on protests against this backward and, in my view, almost criminal Article 30. The Catholic church ought to be ashamed of itself for setting itself above women's consecrated human rights. By all means - believe whatever you want, but do not impose your religious beliefs onto others. It may have been politicians who voted for the Article 30, but let us not fool ourselves by ignoring from where "guidance" came...

We should be embarrassed that the country is ruled by the Church and that we are allowing them to determine what choices we have in life. But, then again, since nothing else embarrasses us, why should this?

Juan B throws personal attacks on father Alberto ,but how many Mother Teresa's has the extreme left produced (Stalin,Mao,Pol Pot, Ceaucescu ,Che Guevara etc.) .
You all would criticize anyone who blamed a whole group for the faults of a few y your hatred of Christianity in general brings out the hateful side of secular humanism.

Now on subject ,the handful of people that showed up at that minuscule rally would be completely overwhelmed by any rally called to support the human rights and right to life of the unborn .
Again Juan B would be proud of abortion and homosexuality,it's obvious his ideas are the ideas of yankee perversion and the animals who would dismember the unborn limb from limb on the altar of the feminazi movement. What crime have those children committed to be subject to a brutal and heartless dismemberment ? I know it's inconvenient to form a mental picture of the reality of abortion ,that's why these cowards don't want to see the atrocity they commit for "progr

Pepe32: Asks..."What crime have those children committed to be subject to a brutal and heartless dismemberment ?" Answer: "Guilty by association" of the stupid mother that allowed conception in the first place by not being the last line of defense from the stupid fathers absence of providing prophylaxis. = Both "Guilty". All three should be sentenced. Neither of the three will repeat the same error twice.
