SANTO DOMINGO.- The Central Electoral Board (JCE) yesterday rejected a resolution that would keep parents from giving their children names that are odd, difficult to pronounce or which don’t define the baby’s sex.

Judge Jose Angel Aquino’s proposal failed to get the needed votes, said JCE president Julio Cesar Castaños.

Aquino’s proposal would also prevent Civil Registrar Officials from registering newborns with more than three names, with last names as given names, and the same names of their brothers, or as their parents.

Among the odd names already registered figure “Scholastic Jimenez”; "Primitive Duran"; "Mazda Altagracia"; "Toshiba Fidelina"; "Tonton Ruiz"; "Dear Pérez"; "Rambo Mota"; " Rambo Pot" and "Furúnculo Guzmán.”

People choosing to handicap their children with stupid names should be forced to call them "child of an idiot".

Since we're at it, might as well contribute with some of my knowledge.

Luz y Esperanza (as the couple is known around Jarabacoa. Esperanza is the man)

Sor (the suffix is used to denote a nun, which she isen't)

Doctor (the guy is illiterate)

Cristiana (my maid for awhile. She was unreligious, and a thief to boot)
