Santo Domingo. - Once the Cuban Revolution materialized in January, 1959, a group of exiled Dominicans who took part in the effort, led by Enrique Jimenes Moya, asked the revolutionary authorities to support an even dangerous project: To end by force the 29 years of oppression in Dominican Republic, by overthrowing Rafael Trujillo’s dictatorship.
Cuban commander Delio Gomez Ochoa was in charge of selecting the training site and schedule.
Dominicans flocked to Cuba from Venezuela, Puerto Rico and the United States, together with international freedom fighters who backed their patriotic cause, tragically ended at the beaches of Maimon and Estero Hondo, Puerto Plata province, and in the rugged mountains of Constanza, La Vega province.
Although their effort wasn’t successful, the valor sparked others to confront the dictatorship, buried by Trujillo’s assassination on May 30, 1961.

Castro's only motivation was to further his Cuban revolution to include other Latin American Country's and to further his control over them with the Communist Soviets support. Sure Trujillo had to go. Is it no wonder why the U.S invaded the DR after Trujillo, like it or not the DR is much better today because of it, for those who differ go LIVE in Cuba not visit or vacation. It is my understanding the Cubans who were born after 1959 were indoctrinated into believing the Castro's way is the best and only way, and are the ones who support and admire him the most. CASE IN POINT: The last time I was in the DR I meet a Female 30ish Cuban Citizen doing Business in the DR, once she found out I was Dominican but raised in the U.S she started boosting about how great life was in Cuba. Sorry to say to avoid an argument I with held and listened for a while. She explained how the Cuban life style should be a model for the rest of Latin America and the DR was lagging behind Cuba.

All I said was....
Unlike Cuba, WE in the U.S have freedoms unlike any where else in the World, like....
a working Constitution and a Bill of RIGHTS. And if she really knew anything about our U.S History she would talk from facts not a one sided Castro argument. LISTEN LEARNED: one should speak from truth and knowing ALL THE FACTS.
I welcome ALL your thoughts on the subject.

These people should be remembered for their bravery in the face of a monster regime. They were one of the many catalysts needed to spark the revolution that ended the life of the goat....In many revolutions throught history there have been failed attempts that are remembered, for their simbolism, not for thier end result. Respect and Honor those who deserve it. Viva la raza inmortal!!! Viva Quisqueya!!!

Most Soldiers who fight & DIE never enjoy the fruits of their Labor. I don't believe those killed ever envisioned a 2009 DR if so, they would be proud. That memorial to me represents TOTAL FREEDOM not a Castro Type of Dictatorship, many in the DR like the U.S today don't appreciate the sacrifices made, in other words "You don't appreciate what you have, until you lose it" some how that rings a Liberty Bell for me.... TRUTH, JUSTICE and THE PURSUIT OF HAPPINESS, for those of us living in the U.S Today.
DR like the US aren't perfect but, far better then Haiti to the West and a large number of South American Country's including IRAN.

There's no proof of that Mr. C, unless you know something I don't and at the time of the expedition even our own state department didn't think that Castro was a Marxist. Either way this expedition was part of the chain of events that lead to Trujillo's downfall and it was composed by men who gave there lives. As such: Gloria a los patriotas. Their work was not in vain.

Gringo Montreal,
My mistake again, here's something. Gringo is a phrase that is used to describe the Anglo-North American White Male Border Agent by the Mexican illegals, some find that word offensive, it's roots date back to the early 1930's U.S Mexican American border Patrol Agent. Pronounced GREEN meaning the color of the uniform and GO meaning time to get the F%^# out of Dodge, thus the word GRIN-GO as pronounced by the North Americans. You should ask a American born about Freedom, I've never been to Canada to compare..............One thing is true Freedom is seldom FREE and I'll exercise my freedom by never purchasing a GM car. Are you really a Canadian ? or a Dominican living there. TAKE CARE.
BASTA,
My Dad just joking and threw frustration upon first seeing the DR in over 25 years after a visit to the DR last February of "09" said those same words then recanted those words by saying Trujillo was a BUTCHER, Dad lived in that era of terror, so I do understand.

If memory serves me correctly the Dominicans living in the area of the landing helped Truillos army track the rebels down. Rightly or Wrongly Trujillo was very popular in El Campo. There was no way a Cuban like revolution would ever work against him. He was killed by insiders not Rebels. But the Men who died in Constanza deserve to be honored for their effort to overthrow one of the worst tyrants in modern history!

"Rightly or Wrongly Trujillo was very popular in El Campo."
You are correct. The population was thoroughly indoctrinated by the regime. My granparents who were from the countryside, may they rest in peace, heaped nothing but praise on Trujillo even as they would recount atrocities that they had heard of during the era.

I'm no big Castro supporter, but I 've heard about the alleged "millions" Castro has , I always ask why? just because he can ? does he have the world's largest supply of Viagra ? is he going to buy GM ?. We know about Baby Doc's Swiss loot and the late Mobutu's stolen Francs, in both cases, much of the loot was recovered and sent back to the nations of origin (to be stolen again), but at least the original crooks didn't get it all.
