Santo Domingo.- The National District Arbitration Court on Friday ruled to suspend the construction of the cement plant next to the Los Haitises National Park.

“The works to build the cement plant will be suspended until the full trial culminates,” said Luis Moreno, lawyer for the farmers, community and spelunker organizations grouped in MCCU.

The organizations, supported by professionals of the Lawyers Guild, filed suit in the Arbitration, Tributary and Administrative Court to obtain a restraining order against the Consorcio Minero Dominicano, the Santiago-based company which is building the facility.

The organizations say the construction of the plant will jeopardize the northeast region’s biodiversity and its aquifers.

They need more organizations to join this suit. It also needs courage of officials and persons of influence who are remaining silent on their opposition of the cement plant to speak up now.
