"Cría cuervos, que te sacarán los ojos", that's what has happened on the case of this accursed woman and our country. She's just biting the hand that had fed her and her family, when the only thing that they would have received on their haitian homeland would have been a rotten death in one of the bidonvilles over there, be it by hunger, pestilence or a bullet in the chest in a crossfire between the macoutes and the chimeres fighting over control on those god-forsaken slums, after being raped to the very marrow by any of the thugs, of course. In other words, she and her family would have been another casualties of that country's war-torn landscape had her mother not taken the fateful step of fleeing that mess when she had the chance.

being so reactionary to these types will prove counterproductive and aid them in painting all Dominicans in a poor light and also allow them to paint this as a racial only issue which the liberal left will eat up and ask fore more while funding more NGOs and applying pressure Via HillyBilly and that bunch.....education of the American public is very important this is a cultural affront as well as a Sovereign and Language affront the racial aspects should be downplayed as the outside agitators will use this as their major tool

The problem with being defensive with these NGO types, Dobbsie, is that it can only lead to make them more bold on their attacks, cuz' being defensive will only be seen as a sign of weakness. Heck, the weakness displayed by the different dominican govs. on the last decade have been the thing that have spurred these NGO people into action, cuz' when the old man was on the seat, they didn't so much as rise a murmur about things. We should do as the North Koreans and the Israelis do, that is, to not care less about what the int. opinion might think. After all, we're already villains on their eyes (despite our country giving those inmigrants concessions that no other country on this earth would give them), might as well as play the part. We would not be the first nor the last country to act unilaterally on these matters on the int. arena.

A lot of the comments on here seem to give credence to Sonia Pierre's argument that a vitriolic xenophobia has infected my people in the DR.
I think that everyone needs to calm down, take a deep breath and realize that we are all part of one human family. I invite those of you who feel such hatred and distrust of Haitians to come to New York. Here you will realize that newly arrived Dominicans often suffer the same type of xenophobia and racism that Haitians suffer in the DR. But here in New York immigrants (Dominicans/Chicanos/Haitians/Jamaicans/etc), black Americans, and progressive white americans have banned together to demand that the government treat all people with respect. We will not accept police brutality against any of our neighbors nor discrimination against our brothers and sisters who are recently arrived.

The thing is, dominicanaamericana, that no country on the area (not even the mighty ole USA) would accept having a 20% of their population being composed by inmigrants, specially not ones coming out from the poorest country on the Western Hemisphere. The US can't pretend that we, a struggling third world country ourselves, load up with the problems of our neighbour without any kind of help whatsoever.
From: United States
@Lautaro - why would you want the DR to be like North Korea? We should be proud of the DR for being part of the world community, more than that we should strive to be a leader in the world community - a leader for humane and just treatment of immigrants since so many of our people have immigrated or are the children of immigrants.
What strikes me as really crazy about the new nationality provisions in the constitutional reform is that the DR is intent on being the only country in the hemisphere to have a Jus Sanguinis system. This is not smart. What makes the Americas special is the fact that we are all the descendants of immigrants, slaves, and indios. Understanding this we built our constitutions around the Jus Solis nationality requirements. Why should the child of a Haitian born in the DR have LESS right to DR citizenship then I do as a estadounidense of dominican heritage. That makes no sense!

@ Lautaro,
I agree, the DR can not bear this burden alone. But we are a mixed people, and a people that understand the history of mestizaje and immigration has made us stronger. We should ask that the U.S. give foreign aid to the DR based on the amount of Haitians we allow to stay in our country while the country of Haiti is going through such a terrible time. Other countries have gotten aid based on the number of immigrants they allow to stay. Like Ecuador for instance, which has a lot of Colombians fleeing over the border because of the war, is getting foreign aid from the US to help to deal with the mess. The DR should ask for similar help!
From: United States
Lautaro and FreddCDobbs-Very true, I agree with you both. Those are the best techniques. Never let your enemies know where you are coming from or let them see the whites of your eyes. The element of surprise must be present. "..... not care less about what the int. opinion might think." Hay que hacerse el pendejo that is the key.

Another thing, dominicanaamericana, is that what this mercenary is accomplishing is quite the opposite of what she (supposedly) wants, because, let's think for a moment that she has accomplished her purpose and made the DR receive economic sanctions from the int. community. Which group do you think will be blamed for this fallout? Yes, that's right, the very people that she's supposedly defending with her "struggle". You can bet on anything that this "opening of the can of worms" scenario will play out exactly as I'm telling you. Heck, were she a more cunning and wiser person, she would let time and numbers do their work, as they will surely do if things continue as they are now with the open border that we have.

Dominicanaamericana
Is obvious that you are a young person and are not well inform about the history of Haiti and its never-ending political turmoil. First of all you need to understand that people like Mrs.Pierre are only interested in promoting falsehood and to use and slander DR to further her own cause.
Show me a Dominican American that have gone to the extreme as to put a warning about NY on google earth telling people of the world that NY is a racist City and I show you un chino negro.
Don’t fall for the Afrocentric theory of Racism and discrimination, this is not about race, it is about natural resources and nationality. Haitians get offended when you tell them the truth about their lack of love for their own country and ask them how long is it going to take for haiti to become a reliable partner not a burden to the Dominican Republic.
You'll never see not one comment by a haitian admiting that DR is always been their best allied
you know why? is their nature.
From: United States
To dominicanaamericana-Please excuse me but your comments are good hearted but naive, which indicates to me that you don't fully understand the true nature of the Haitian invasion. Everyone pulls the "race card" as the basis of the conflix between both countries and though it may have a racial undertones, in reality it has less to do about race and more about economics. You just don't understand the severe harm that a massive influx of Haitians has done to poor Dominican natives, the ones if not the most negatively affected. You are using bad examples to justify the immigration of undocumented Haitians and about the "jus sanguines" concept, which leads me to believe that you are not a Dominican. A real Dominican knows and would never express themselves as you have. We do not hate Haitians, but what you are proposing in the long run will back fire and quarantee the extinction of Dominican culture as we know it today. You need to do more reading and studying on the subject.
From: United States
@guillermone: You are right, I am not a Dominican, I am a U.S. citizen of Dominican heritage. Both of my parents are Dominican, born and raised in the Dominican Republic until they immigrated to the U.S. together. Does that make my point of view invalid? I live in a very diverse community, and I am friends with people of all races and ethinicities. I will tell, you I love my Dominican American community. I think we are a bridge between cultures. We help to unite the Black Americans with the immigrant cause because we live in some of the same neighborhoods and have experienced some of the same discrimination.
From: United States
Also, I wish gulliermone, that you would read my comments fully. I do not accuse Dominicans in general of hatred, but I do think that those who comment on this article and threaten violence against the Haitians stranded within the DR through no fault of their own have not fully thought about what their words mean. I know you do not really want to chop Haitians up with machetes, but it is really gross to even joke about such a thing and it makes me really sad that people express themselves in such a way rather than engaging in meaningful and civil discourse.
@Lautaro - you are certainly correct about Sonia Pierre's strategy being the incorrect way of going about changing hearts and minds, but I do think there is a grain of truth in what she says, that is, punishing children for the sins of their parents is on its most basic level wrong.

Now that I think of it, she's suffering from the same flaws that have plagued every dominican wannabe "revolutionary" on our tragic history, that is, hastiness and love for glory/spotlight (what we call over here "figureo"). The backing of a superpower means nothing when the wannabe "revolutionary" in question doesn't have the hearts and minds of the people he/she wants to change.
