Santo Domingo. – Dozens of environmentalists and environment defense organizations on Tuesday staged a protest to reject the construction of a cement plant in the Los Haitises National Park’s relief zone, a project they say would seriously harm its biodiversity.

Representatives of the Dominican Academy of Science, Group Jaragua, Dominican Environmental Group CAD, Santo Domingo State University, Toy Jarto (I’m sick of it) and others announced they’ll block the plant’s construction, with rallies and pickets in the next few days and in the United Nations building in New York on Friday.

They said they’ll also stage a march along the streets of the city Salcedo (north), as well as several pickets in Santiago (north) and in the Dominican Consulate in Spain.

They said the would harm the Karts of Los Haitises, an unique formation in the world and the country’s second larges strategic water reserve.

In that regard Jaragua Group president Ivonne Arias called the project unviable in its present location, because the formation of Los Haitises stores billions of cubic meters of water, essential to the five eastern provinces and their hotels, including Santo Domingo.

She said the President alone cannot dispose of the national patrimony. “He cannot impose this on anybody, we are not in a dictatorship, we’re in a democratic regime where the institutions have the right to express their opposition against the things that damage the common patrimony.”

Other organizations which oppose the project include La Multitud, Spelunker Group, the farmers grouped in the MCCU, Alternative Social Forum, National Environmental Assembly (ANA), COTEDO, the Catholic Church Environmental Pastoral Group, Collective Woman and Health, Camañista Circles among others.

And just think about it, USAID just (yesterday) donated $10 MM USD to DR Medio Ambiente's efforts for Natural preservation and betterment of the DR. This is like asking a convicted serial child molester to care for small children, unsupervised. The USAID folks are totally out of step with reality. The DR is getting worse by the hour, and soon will rival Haiti, as the Americas quickest fall from grace, of a Failed State . The saddest gesture is, the ruling class is allowing this to happen.

I have been near los haitises and you can even smell the rich soil and air quality. They say that a cement plant will not harm the park but there is no way that the air quality will stay the same even if they filter the air coming out of the plant. Buid this plant across the border and save our country

While all the Dummies were attending the Active Forces forums with Lie-onel Fernandez and he blah, blah, blahed them to death, HIS MOST EXCELLENT staff were rapping the country's natural resources.

Any type of industrial process no matter how clean they claim it is will always damage the natural environment.

Do not let them put that cement plant into a natural beautiful environment like Los Haitises.

Let Leonel and his cronies get money from other activities but not from destroying a natural wonder in the name of propina and their wives designer hand bags.

they need to build it in Haiti. If this is built in DR they are going to use Haitian workers anyway. Both countries will benifit, Haiti can charge taxes and DR can keep the natural beauty

This plant can be easily built in La Linea Noroeste(Montecristi, Dajabon, etc) this area has easy access to the Manzanillo port, good road access and most of all very little vegetation or aquifers that can be affected by this plant. In the south near Azua or even close to Barahona there are large stretches of land suitable for this type of monster facotory. Los Hiaitises play such a vital role in the health of our rivers, forests and future. Anyone that has been lucky enough to visit knows about its unparalleled beauty.
