The Assembly's session today.

SANTO DOMINGO.- True to the adage ‘I obey the law as long as it doesn’t jeopardize me’, during the debates on Wednesday an Assembly member said he opposed the notion of including an article in the Constitution stating the reasons a legislator may lose his mandate.

The proposal by Victor Suárez, quickly dispatched, stated that the legislators would lose their seats if they took part in influence peddling; misappropriation of taxpayers’ money; failure to take possession of their seat within the 30 days following the date of the legislature of the Chambers; for absence, or for violating the statute of conflict of interest with the post.

Once his proposal was rejected, the ruling PLD party assemblyman from Santiago blamed some of his colleagues in the opposition PRD party, which in turn led PRD spokesman Ruddy González to call him “inept."

However the Assembly did approve new articles in the Constitution to their benefit: “The members of both Chambers will enjoy the most complete immunity from the opinions they express in sessions," and "no deputy or senator could be deprived of their freedom during the legislature, without the authorization of the Chamber to which they belongs, except in the case they’re apprehended during the commission of a crime."

Unheard of ! There truly is nothing new under the sun as the word of God says ..It was the fear of loosing thier power and influence that motivated the religious leaders to falsly accuse Christ and have Him put to death on a cross .

If they can only be arrested if caught in the commission of a crime then the police should arrest them as they cash their paychecks. It is criminal that they get paid for doing nothing other than filling their pockets.

I've always felt that a politician's principle allegiance is to power.....not the people they were elected to serve.

LF's "zero tolerance" is a dismal failure.

You would think that, if he had balls, he would tell these retards that there does not have to be a law against immoral behavior.

Same day, same crap.

so, they can only lose their seat if they are caught in the commission of a crime, but not for influence peddling; misappropriation of taxpayers’ money; failure to take possession of their seat within the 30 days following the date of the legislature of the Chambers; for absence, or for violating the statute of conflict of interest with the post....., I don't know, seems if you are a public servant and do these things, it should be a crime if it isn't. I mean, basically aren't they saying no, we should not lose our position for any of these immoral and at the very least highly unethical acts. If they are so against it, guess we know what they are up to... nice to see the guy who brought this up called inept... guess he has no place in politics in the DR. What was he thinking? Honesty? Public Service? Wrong country amigo.
