SANTO DOMINGO.- The Customs Agency Thursday uncovered a ring which, using forged documents, tried to smuggle merchandise from Panama to the Caucedo Multimodal Port, for which they would’ve paid more than RD$209 million in duties.

Customs charged Pedro Encarnacion, employee of the customs agency Leehan and the truck driver Alexander Castillo, who were immediately sent to spend three months of temporary prison in the La Victoria jail.

Customs said the tow men tried to smuggle 14 containers of liquors, home appliances and garments, using the facilities provided for the free zones. It said its agents detected the forged documents in the name of the company Will-bes Dominicana Inc.

As always, the poor Indians go to jail, but the Big Fish get away. btw, remember the 7 containers of tainted toothpaste that were brought in via Panama (China's Product). The money (Big Fish) behind that caper was never brought to justice. Had to be someone with power and money, who could have poisened many Dominican for a few bucks. Life is not important in the DR. It was all kept quiet (no press). Todo es Posible en el Pais de las Maravillas !

Same goes for auto import. They say that the vehicle has to be 5 years or newer but when you go to a car dealer cars from 1998 say "just imported from USA" on the windsheild. How do they do this? I have a 96 Land Rover that I would love to send over.

Totally concure with you fellows, the small fish will always get trap in the spider's web of DR corrupted legal system. after all who cares, the real issues affecting our people such as lack of a reliable and dependable health system, education, water, electricity, thrustworthy plice system, are not even remotely within humane standard. Yet, they want to make some noise, nice try Mr. Nice guy.
