Washington.- Aside from the material aid with equipment to the Dominican Republic in the war on drugs, which will be reinforced through Plan Merida, the United States contributes logistics and intelligence with eight special agents.

U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) sources said the “first line” agents collaborate with Dominican antinarcotics authorities in the design of strategies to confront international drug trafficking operations, but always respecting the local independence and decisions to prevent any interference.

The United States is particularly interested in contributing with the local agencies to bolster their capacity against organized crime with highly trained, quick-response tactical units.

In addition to the frontal combat to seize narcotics and detain traffickers, the DEA considers that seizing the money from narcotics sales is what inflicts the most damage on drug-trafficking organizations.

In Colombia, from where large drug shipments head to Central America and the Caribbean to later try to reach the U.S., the DEA has 60 agents; Venezuela has only two of an original 10; and only one Nicaragua, where president Daniel Ortega has publicly accused that agency of delving in espionage.

This is a flawed approach to the problem:

("first line” agents collaborate with Dominican antinarcotics authorities in the design of strategies to confront international drug trafficking operations.)

You are sleeping with the enemy. The Dominican authorities (DNCD/PN/Funcionarios) are a large part of the "Trafficking" equation. Handle them as a Mushroom grower would do to his crop, "keep them in the dark and feed them sh*t". Only then will you succeed in your mission.

Open your eyes DEA.!

This is a great way to start, let the Dominican Republic be a platform for the USA to get rid of the drug problem that is poisoning our region. Plus the americans can truly see what goes on from the inside and not from the ouside. I'm sure after this news, lots of people are scrambling to make paper trails that don't exists.Their time is coming. One sad but true conviction will take place and thats of LF, because it took so long for it to happen"ZERO TOLERANCE on CORRUPTION". LF will be a victim and find his way UP-SHETS CREEK w/o a paddle.

Bobby Jo. I like the way you think.

I am convinced LF meant to say “Zero Intelligence”. We are incapable of doing the moral action.

Thanks, G

I have a corrupted mind with good intentions..............Politics in DR is just the same as running a bodega in NY, you skim off the top and create two books ( One for them and One for me) no one knows......... Back in the 80's and early 90's this was the way. Mid 90's the IRS started placing agents in the bodega to determind your annual gross profit and if you were a bodegero at THIS time and had been in business for a long period . The IRS made there own estimate then you had to pay-up according to there figures....(lets sit back and watch the song and dance act that our corrupted trusted employees of the DR will put on for us). Those that did good and not report fully either payed-up or went to jail . Lots of them sold before the IRS had a chance to place an agent and retired to DR.................Now we know where our politicians went to school.......LF knows this, he grew up in Washington heights.....

I am wondering what is the DEA bringing to the table? - US is the champion consumer of narcotics, the "logistics and intelligence" is needed here...what a joke.
