Another potential tragedy...File photo.
Sabana de la Mar, Dominican Republic. - More than 20 boatpeople who cast of Saturday from Nagua to Puerto Rico are missing in the Mona Pass, relatives of the undocumented travelers said.
They said they haven’t heard from them and fear that the yola they sailed on is adrift on the high seas.
They asked the authorities to launch a search and rescue operation by air and water, to determine the whereabouts of the 26 travelers from different parts of the country, around 10 of which are from the local area.
Hato Mayor province governor Moreno Vásquez visited the Armed Forces Ministry Tuesday morning to request assistance.

Very sad indeed. Let us hope for the best. Nasty storms are now over the area, so if they are still adrift, they will have a rough time, for the next 24 hours. Prayers are their only salvation, that is if they are at sea presently. MG will not look for them in these conditions. Maybe the USCG will help.

I hope there are some survivors. Banana boats are not made to go that deep into the ocean. I really think that DR needs to teach the dangers of the yolas in elementary school.

XWILL7 you are an A hole... 99.9% of these poor souls are completely desperate and in many cases this is their last resource. For you to make a joke out of it is not cool!
PS it looks like the one in need of an elementary school is you, learn to spell!

The hole must be you. I was not making fun of this at all. I know people that are poor in DR, its bad. Most people that go on the yola do not know the real dangers involved. They really should teach the public all of the dangers that you will face when traveling via yola. I agree that most people are desperate, but its better to be alive and poor than dead in the sea.

you must be mentally challenged, didn't you know that people all around the globe migrate for whatever reason they decided.

The overpopulation of the island is feeding the illegal emigration out of the island. We need to control population growth! Diseases, aging, catastrophe, and other involuntary death mechanisms must be allowed to fester!
We are guilty of letting this situation to get to this point!

antonio1, i would not characterise this as "migration". i would call it "escape", or, in the very least, the attempt to.

X ,I though I taught you better than that . Im so ashamed . Maybe they should have used your Hummer ? Didnt you say they were re-enacting a scene from the movie Jaws? . I seriously have to agree with Dreadlocks as I usually do . This is nothing less than a desperate attempt to escape thier misery and to avoid paying a few speeding tickets they got on thier motoconchos , not a group of crazy thrill seekers trying to be the first Dominicans to sail a canoe over Niagra falls via Puerto Rico. I admire thier courage against such overwhelming odds . Atleast the Cubans have the dry land act in thier favor as well as rafts that are much more proven to get them to thier destination. Perhaps more tragic is the possibility of them actually making it to the Gran Manzana and discovering all the worms inside after they take that first bite.

What is sad is that many who do make it will still suffer and not make enough money in USA. By the time your deductions from you pay check are removed and all factor in all oif the living expenses you might still end up with nothing.

Sad but true...
Any one who has crossed the passage knows the dangers....
Rough seas followed by a TD is not good....
