SANTO DOMINGO. – In a scene fit for a cops and robbers movie, the deputy Abraham Martinez and a companion yesterday busted a drug sale between six people in San José de Ocoa province (south), capturing three, a woman among them, who had 14 packages of a white powder presumably cocaine.

The bust took place between the communities El Memizo and Laguneta, said Martinez, a ruling PLD party legislator. He said he and his companion had gone out to look for those people, who had previously stolen a motorcycle from two of his constituents.

He said when he arrived the six were arguing amongst them, but when seeing him coming “one group began firing” at them, forcing him to use his pistol to return fire. He added that several townspeople arrived to help.

Martinez said three of the six drug traffickers managed to escape, but one of the other three he nabbed had admitted it was a drug sale and offered him narcotics as a bribe to let them escape. “Then I said to him show me the drug, he took me to it and I then handed them over to the authorities,”

The lawmaker said the suspects were handed over to Ocoa province prosecutor Neris Soto, and one of them made threats against his life, because if convicted “could face up to 30 years in jail.”

Last night the Police identified one of the three as Jonathan Ramirez, 32, but didn’t provide the names of the other man and the woman.

I think the authorities are too soft and lenient on the delinquents. If I were in law enforcement, the moment a criminal makes an attempt against my life, it is all over for him. Just look at it this way, the criminal simply has no mercy for me or my family. If that is the case, then I will have no mercy for him either. If these bastards wants to kill me particularly during the line of duty, then they need and should be executed on the spot. Forget about an arrest and apprehendsion, going to trial and sentencing. That is too nice. Just look at Mexico, the cartels torture and kill police officers by the dozens, as if they were chicken for slaughter and leave them all piled up on the street, abandoned like road kill. Yet, those very same traffickers constantly excape prison with the help of the cartel. These dealers have no scruples and must be wiped off the face of the earth. There is no other option. The war on drugs has been fought for close to 40 years and it only has gotten worse

I guess you guys are definitely in agreement with Fidel's take on government, or maybe Trujillo's. Lol. We can just start shooting everyone who defies the law. As a matter of fact, anyone who disobeys and does not agree with the law should be shot. If you even look at a police officer wrong you should be shot??? Because definitely the only law abiding citizens we have left in DR are the cops. All joking aside, that's what the courts are there for. Let them be judged. Cops aren't judges.

Hard to tell the crooks apart isnt it ! Im sure the drugs will be put to good use as thier in good hands now ..But how true ! If you would start actually killing these scums and cutting thier genitals off in the process instead of trying to rehabilatate them , the nations crime rate is almost guaranteed to drop 75 % overnight by default . Communism does have atleast one or two things going for it .

I don't know much about this politician or his motives. Perhaps this was staged for career enhancement since, based on everyday commentaries on political situation and corruption in DR, one would think that "hay que empezar a guindar gente". However, whatever his motives, I applaud his action.

Certainly, the situation meant enough to him that he was willing to risk his own life to redress it. Man, that's how I remember the men from my father's generation...no more men like that...they are mostly gone and the rest are too crooked and devoid of all decency.

I suppose this was a very courageous act and one that should be emulated more and more.

I am totally baffled as to why a people willing to risk their lives in yolas crossing the Mona Passage would take so much abuse and indiscretions from a totally corrupt government without rebelling. Unquestionably they have courage, but perhaps not of the right kind.

The only time I would ever justify extrajudicial sentencing is when traffickers attempt on the life of law enforcement. If the criminal surrenders peacefully, willingly and without resistence, then and only then should traditional police procedures take place and followed accordingly. Otherwise, it makes no sense to show mercy to those that fail to have a heart in favor of relatively under paid police officers who only try to do their jobs, fulfull duties and make a humble and honest living. Since its existence and throughout the world, the CIA has repeatedly done the same thing, eliminate powerful political figures, when those individuals no longer support American interests. They claim it to be justified assasinations for the sake of humanity. Now what makes the CIA any different or better? Does the end justify the means? Or is it that we have double standards? Who was the master mind behind the deaths of Trujillo, Somoza and others.
