President Fernandez prefers conversation.
Santo Domingo. - President Leonel Fernandez will host a luncheon-dialogue with media executives on Thursday, to deal with the topic of corruption, despite demands of less “conceptualization” and more action from diverse sectors in Dominican Republic.
According to the Presidency’s invitation, some government officials will also participate in the talks. “The Presidency’s Press, information and Publicity Office convenes the lunch-conversation for this Thursday, July 23, at 1:00 p.m., to deal with the topic of the Government’s measures to fight corruption, with the presence of the President, Leonel Fernandez, and other officials of the Government.”
Fernandez, whose Administration has been rocked by several scandals lately, affirmed that the recent denunciations on corruption are politically motivated.
From: Dominican Republic, la Romana
How can the President continue to say the allegations of corruption are simply politically motivated when his own advisers have stated there are huge savings to the community if the corruption is halted and when the Cardinal and his Bishops speak out against corruption and when there is damning evidence through TV and print media and when we can see it here ourselves every day.
Why does he support Segura who has admitted having many family members and relations of the President in his pay and why did his advisers on presidential pardons resign when he unilaterally pardoned the three rich people in prison who had made millions from corruption.

Less talking and more action. Maybe then we won't be known to the international community as lawless island of theieves.

I feel very sorry and really heart broken for the most beautiful island in the whole world. I don't think we Haitians and/or Dominicans deserve her as a mother and a provider. As far as I am concerned, there is not really a big difference between how we haitians and dominicans treat our people and this beautiful island. At least the haitians are destroying their side of it out of sheer ignorance and incompetence, but you, the cousins from the East, have a long way to go in order to get rid of those sharks that are feeding out of your country and who don't care either for the people or the land.
Shame, shame on us! I don't think that the ones who fought for freedom from our side and yours had in mind to let special interest groups enslave socio economically our people.

I do not understand why the president needs to have a lunching meeting to discuss corruption in the country. (Is this like the same meeting he had a few days ago to
discuss the electrical situations in the country?) He knows who they are and where they are. They are politicians, high-ranking Police/Military officers, Businessmen, friends and family members. Ever since LF took over as president corruptions is widespread, Drug trafficking is big business, electricity is worsens than worse, no running water, new roads, and tunnels/ bridges that are falling apart, only after a couple of years old. Yet he wants to have a meeting discuss what? The only credit I give LF is the sophisticated way he talks to the country and how he thinks we are a country of fools. The true is we are a country of what is in it for ME, MYSALF, AND I.

LF should stop B.S. and hold those accountable for their actions. Corruption is well known in all government offices, but how can those DR gov't fat cats continue to steal from the poor. It is sad very sad that still people starve every night and the gov't doesn't do a thing about fixing the problem. Over and over politicians and the wealthy are caught with their pants down why not take action LF! Please When LF term is over his friends will walk away with MILLIONS OF $ and act like nothing is wrong. TOTALLY WRONG!!!

All what is written is speculation but it is my guess that tomorrow Leonel will again try to sweet talk his way around this problem by saying the tendering processes have improved , the evidence against Segura is not strong , he has put anti corruption legislation in place and every country has a little corruption.
He will admit to nothing and say it is all a big beat up by the press and politicians

The same Gallup-Hoy poll reveals that 45% of Dominicans are unhappy with how the government has handled the effects of the international financial crisis, while only 35% feel the government has done a good job.
Also, 49% of those interviewed say they don't agree with the measures the government has taken during this time, while 45% do agree with the measures adopted by the government. Among the measures implemented are a loan from the Inter American Development Bank for US$300 million, to free up credit, flexibility in bank credits, reduction of interest rates and a temporary flexibility of prudence norms.
The poll also revealed that 60% of those interviewed feel that President Leonel Fernandez only governs for a privileged few, while 36% feels he governs for the benefit of the country.
In the same poll, 8 of every 10 Dominicans say they are against the installation of a cement plant in the buffer zone of the Los Haitises National Park.

I am 100% sure that if LF run for president again he will win. All he have to do is, two weeks before the election, have his people turn on the electrical power grid throughout the country, paint a bridge or two, fix’s a couple of streets, open the water vales in some of the sectors that have not had water in the last two years and handout a couples of food bags and he get reelected again. What a great country.

LF can't run again...unless there is an ammendment in the DR's constitution. Instead, it will be R. Segura's squeeze, Margarita, who will be the next PLD candidate and President of the republic in 2012..
