SANTO DOMINGO.- President Leonel Fernandez’s stance on government corruption differs widely from what he touts in his speeches, in which despite his transparency and “zero tolerance" jingle, usually remains at the sidelines when some of his collaborators are linked to fraudulent actions.

In those cases, far from demanding punishment or ordering an investigation, what he’s done is justify his collaborators’ actions before the media and through them quell public opinion, as occurred recently, when he attributed the denunciations to political undertones during this term, his third.

"President Fernandez’s leadership is mostly in the media, a resource he then uses to dilute the denunciations on corruption," said the sociologist and political scientist Rosario Espinal.

She said until now that strategy has proven effective, "because after he holds his meetings (with media managers) the waters tend to calm, because he has that direct contact and for his great capacity for political seduction" and cited the Sun Land case.

Espinal said she regrets that Fernandez will most likely try to take advantage of the media again when he meets with media directors in the National Palace today to speak about the “tsunami” of corruption denunciations in the last few weeks, "because it’s really the moment for him to understands that there’s much disgust in the population and it’s time he takes measures which show the population that he’s really doing something important to correct corruption."

He took lessons from 8 years of the G.W. Bush regime. He is a Doctor of Jurisprudence in this area of expertise just like the Northern Yankee Government Gangsters. "If you can't beat em', join em'". Just consider all the $$$ saved from not putting people in prison for victimless crimes like the northern counterpart does. $$$ savings for the D.R.

Media's government scrutiny should not be tamed by this type of luxureous lunches in the National Palace. Media scrutiny should be unnegociable. I hope the moral of a good journalist does not get distracted by this type of meetings.

Ah Buenoha , as I already remarked , this week its the journalists , a few months ago the doctors were the scapegoats . Dont panic my Dominican friends ! This is only a test and not a secret agenda of Leo and co. attempting to subtly push the country towards the communist socialist society it seems to be changing into . When did Hugo say he was returning for dinner ?

Like anyone with any power, or in the case of the media, influence, they are easily bought. In this case, just being given an audience with our Pharoah is enough to buy their silence. Is there no one on this island that is not only honest, but has a backbone as well?

Food for thought: corruption in broad daylight, electrical chaos, nepotism, monetary policy that has everybody broke, unemployment, police assasinations in demonstrations, narcos running the country as their own, and nothing being done...

Perfect strategy for Lionel letting the PRD win the coming congressional and presidential election on account of popular unsatisfaction.

Was that too part of the deal with Vargas? Let him win so no contender from PLD should become next President, letting the doorwide open for 2018 when Lionel returns?

The media are the munchkins. They have terrific respect for our Wizard. "Because of the wonderful things he does". If there were more reporters like Nuria, maybe we would get the truth, instead of baseball news on the front pages of our newspapers.

Think about it. Nuria's report on the criminal activities of R. segura was released 3 weeks ago. Has one single thing been done to ascertain the validity of this well documented disclosure? NO. Other than denial after denial the matter has been ignored. LF is merely circling the wagons. (If you don't get this reference, it was what travelers did in the old west of the US when they were attacked. They pulled their wagons to form a circle so that there was no rear, unprotected part of their defenses.)
