SANTO DOMINGO.- A National District court sentenced the ex banker Leonel Almonte to two years in prison, after convicting him of defrauding the depositors of the Universal bank and financial group.
The 1st Collegiate Court Penal judges also ruled that Almonte must pay more than US$4 million to the depositors Cristian C. Caraballo, Rainilda Rodriguez and Rosa N. Caraballo.
Penal Chamber Judges Antonio Sanchez, Izmir Gisselle Méndez and Teófilo Andújar Sanchez also fined the ex banker RD$100 million, to pay for the damages to the depositors.
The prosecution had requested a 15 year prison sentence in the trial against the Universal bank president, which lasted 16 years in different courts and was the country’s first major bank failure.
