Santo Domingo.- The Dominican Government reacted yesterday to U.S. legislator Loretta Sanchez’s statement questioning the purchase of 49% of the shares of Dominican Republic’s only refinery Refidomsa, by Venezuela’s oil giant PDVSA.

The Congresswoman asked to the U.S. State Department to observe the transaction because in her view it violates the Free Trade Agreement (Dr-Cafta).

The Presidency’s Chief of staff, Cesar Pina said the country is a sovereign nation which has decided to have the Venezuelan State-owned company as Refidomsa’s partner, a process he said is legitimate and legal anywhere in the world. “The Dominican Government has no objection that any international organism observes the process of the sale of Refidomsa shares to Venezuela.”

Although I would be the last to defend the Purple pestilence and the corrupt administration of Lie-onel Fernandez, the principle of sovereignty is paramount here. Therefore, the Dominican Republic has the right to trade, negotiate or conduct business with anyone they decide to, period.

Loretta Sanchez appears to be espousing the rhetoric of the former congressman she defeated B-1 Bob Dornan.

Ms. Sanchez herself a former republican, who opportunistically changed parties to run against Mr. Dornan, is probably appealing to the right wing fascists in her district who are funneling Miami Cuban/Venezuelan rightwing dineros!

I hope her next move is not to request that the 82nd Airborne be sent in!

Has the honorable Loretta Sanchez registered herself as a lobbyist for PEMEX ?
