Santo Domingo.- Three people were injured and seven were arrested when Metropolitan Transit Authority (Amet) agents evicted paperwork dealers near the United States Consulate on Friday.

In the incident, the dealers screamed at and insluted the agents who sprayed some of them with pepper gas in the eyes.

“They grabbed me and assaulted me, they pushed me, they sprayed pepper gas at me, they dragged me and put by van on a tow truck and arrested me,” said Joel Restituyo, one of the dealers evicted.

The detainees were taken to Amet headquarters in the Villa Juana sector, after the early morning incident which snarled traffic on the Maximo Gomez avenue and adjacent streets.

I wish these people take these silly protests to some area of the country. This is not what I want to see after a long day at work. Instead of protesting outside the American Consulate, how about protesting at the Presidential Palace. This does'nt make any sense at all.

To everyone this has nothing to do with democracy. This is ad-hoc improvised business (capitalism that do not comply with regulations) put over restricted public domain (probably without permit) that probably threatened the security of the U.S. Consulate (as seen through their eyepiece).

I only wonder if they were warned of a possible physical eviction and the possibility of arrest prior to this sweep?
There's nothing like being warned beforehand and not complying, thus creating your own problems then claim abuse.

Once again only half a story being reported! Why were they protesting? Do they have a reason to protest? Why the American Embassy? etc. So much missing the report does not not make any sense.

These are people who pray on Dominicans simple as that. They were NOT wanted in that area and when the police went to move them out they insulted the police which is not a good idea especially in this country. When Amet pull me over I shake their hands and ask them how they are. They usually don't give me a hard time however I have had friends call me when going down a one way street the wrong way and on the 1 day a month Amet are waiting they argue with them and get their cars impounded.

Life in the DR:)

These people were not protesters. They were scammers. What usually happens is you to to the embassy as an american citizen or a dominican and try to find out scedules or get what ever form you need. The PN outside runs you off saying you can be there then someone magically shows up and offers to help for a fee.
Tis is what I saw less than three weeks ago when I went to the Embassy to get more pages for my passport.

I still don't get the jist of it all but it sounds like a real fiasco and the Americans are right int he middle of it as always is the case. Always the center of attention.
