Santo Domingo.- President Leonel Fernandez headed the inaugural of the “Festival of Ideas, Retrospective and Perspective on the Dominican Political Thought” in the National Palace Monday, organized by the Presidency’s Press Office and other institutions.

Press director Rafael Núñez said the world’s crisis on ethics, morals and ideas makes it imperative to raise the main values and recognize the best people to empower them for the great national task of materializing the “Project of Nation.”

He said for some time humanity has been immersed in a deep crisis at all levels, a situation he said is brutally expressed in the family and other scopes of society. “That reality takes to us to reflect on the need, during these turbulent global crises at all levels with threats of imposing rancid protectionisms, to raise our best values, which are ours, to discover our best men to empower them in the great national task for the Project of Nation.”

The Festival of Ideas will be carried out with the support of seven universities, the foundation FUNGLODE and the Nation Archives, with eight panels to spur a wide ranging debate on the country’s outstanding thinkers and historians.

What is the purpose of generating ideas if, as with the last "Summit", all the ideas are ignored.

For example at the last "summit" 17 ideas for the improvement of electrical service were proposed. ONE, that's right ONE was actually put into effect, and that was to increase the price for our crappy service.

You are welcome. I think the Hippo with Hair will end up the bigger thief. What a clown. Did absolutely nothing other than put a subway in that was too costly for the country and money better served in other directions.

I suppose us dominicans are inclined to be pompous.

I think sometimes a lot is lost in translation when these articles are published, because [really] this just doesn't make sense.

These are initiatives more typically associated with more culturally and economically advanced societies, not 3rd world countries with all of the intrinsic government sanctioned corruption.

This is sort of laughable. Kind of like having the wolves guard the hens. Imagine, a dominican president, particularly present one, talking about ideas on ethics and morals!

Is this whole thing a joke?

Probably Leonel is looking for ideas on how to stay in power.
