Santo Domingo.- The ruling PLD party’s legislators also have internal clashes, as Revisory Assembly president Reinaldo Pared opposes a proposal by several Assembly members to amend article, 30 which criminalizes abortion.

Pared argues that since article 30 was debated in a first reading, it must be approved in the second. He said the PLD’s Political Committee let its lawmakers free to vote as they see fit. “My position is unchanged, that the text remains as is."

His party companion Victor Terrero said the piece needs to be modified and that several Assembly members have raised the need to vary article 30 in a second reading.

The PLD deputy Minou Tavárez Mirabal reiterated that many lawmakers didn’t vote based on their own conviction, but instead out of fear of some sectors that she didn’t identify.

The Catholic Church has led the pro-life stance in the reform of the Constitution, and has even threatened to oppose the lawmakers who vote to decriminalize abortion, in next year’s municipal and congressional elections.

the catholic church or any church needs to stay out of the government. Having unwanted children is the number one cause of poverty.Face it,nobody there is waiting for the wedding night, and are birth control savvy. The majority of young women I know in the DR are sexually active, yet say they feel ashamed to just walk into a drugstore and buy condoms. The guys see it as an expense. And no , they do not see the possible expense of raising a child or...my bad- maybe they just don't care and don't plan to. That is where the cycle of single young poor motherhood starts, as if you were probably not poor enough before.

The religious bigots and fundamentalists and modern day inquisitors at work, denying basic human rights to poor mothers, that will be forced to live a life of misery with an unwanted or unplanned child.
If this law is passed because of the pressure by the religious fundamentalist groups, we would take a giant step backwards on the right to choose that women have, and the right to decide what is better for their own health, welfare and well being.
If passed, as usual, only the poor women that can not afford a fancy doctor will be enslaved by this modern day inquisition rule, or be forced to rely on the old wire hanger routine.
Overpopulation is one of the principal causes of hunger in the world, and the DR does not need more unwanted and unplanned children, to come into this world to suffer hunger, and increase poverty and despair.

nycgirl although I am 100% sure that the Roman Catholic church is completely out of touch with reality when it seeks to ban condoms and abortion , it is also important that people have an institution that can stand up against a corrupt or evil government ..so there are times when we need a church that supports the values that Jesus Christ gave us and in these cases they must be involved with governments .

You see professor here is the reason I despise Lie-onel Fernandez (not hate as I don’t hate anyone); he knows this law is a regressive step for the rights of women and a backward step for the social development of the Dominican society as whole.

So how can a learned, enlightened intellectual like him even entrain this cruel punishment of a law?

Where is his is grand ability to enlighten the untutored populace with his so-called eloquent gift of gab.

Whenever there are fundamental issues facing Dominican society, lack of education, lack of health care, corruption, the failure of basic services like electricity and water he is mum and missing in action.

He demonstrates no leadership in confronting the forces in Dominican society that keep it stagnated in the 15th century.

He just another go along to get along empty suit politician with the ability to deliver a speech full of pie in the sky promises and platitudes!

Here's what the Catholic Church stands for:

(9 year old raped by relative, pregnant with twins is given abortion. Church condemns and excommunicates doctors and parents)

The Church is only strong and has a voice through those of us who belong to it and as Dominican citizens we have as much right as any other to give our opinions no matter what liberal infected US based "thinkers" have to say .

Also poverty does not come from lack of abortion rather from lack of morals from whores and no good men that sleep around without concern and hope to resolve their indiscretions with the murder of an innocent!

Abortion is murder and anyone supporting it is an accessory to murder . We do have free will to do what is right and wrong but to say that abortion is a right when the person being killed has no choice is ridiculous and while some abortions are to save the mother and others due to rape and incest ,they are a tiny percentage while the majority are due to immorality.

I and millions more are the church ,but we are also Dominican citizens with the right to vote and to voice an opinion and no left wing nuts are going to silence us!

"whores and no good men"

What a way to refer to God's children, that is if you believe we are all God"s children of course!

What a picture!

Facial expression suggests great confidence and conviction; more importantly, it suggests you just couldn't slip a fast one past this lady. Hope I am correct in this assessment.

As for the abortion issue, since we've already taken on religion-do we now wish to move on to Santa Claus and Race? Then we would have cover the "three untouchable prongs".

I never could accept the term, abort.. people abort missions, not a life. Why don't you guys call it what it is...murder.

nycgirl, how far in a pregnancy will you allow an abortion, three months, seven months or nine months?

What’s the old saying if men got pregnant abortion would be one of the Ten Commandments, or something like that.

Perhaps you should ask your parents if you were really wanted. Or did they just raise you and faked it. Or they should have aborted you.

The president does not have dictator powers in the DR, and mostly all modern leaders govern by looking at the polls first. You can not blame all that goes south on him, although he is the ultimate man responsible. As you grow older you will learn that politics is the art of compromise and rule of the majority (in the polls.LOL)

glomax

Minou Tavarez is one of our best and she is the daughter of two Dominican heroes, Manuel Tavarez Justo and Minerva Mirabal, both killed by the dark forces.

Abortion should no be used as contraception. There are too many means to avoid pregnancy. I'm more than sick of hearing the argument that a woman has the right to do as she pleases with her body. Once a child is conceived, there is one more body to talk about. We have no right to destroy another life whether still in the womb or not. Just because "modern" society is diluting moral concepts and values, it does not mean that everyone else should follow.
By reading some of the posts, I get the impression that only the rich should have children. I guess then that Abraham Lincoln should have never been born (just to give one example). I also notice that the majority holds the belief that the responsibility rests on the woman. Men should also take the steps necessary to ensure that unwanted children are not brought into this world. For those who don't want to support children financially or bother with raising them, there is always the minor procedure called vasectomy.

Amber, you obviously are not aware of what happens to poor young girls in the rural areas where their relations have sex with them ..the males have no money for even a small operation and the church bans condoms . You may be educated but the population explosion is with the poorest and least educated people in the DR and not with the richest.
One day ..have a look at the orphanages and the street children in the poor barrios here in the DR and maybe when you see the wretched life that is front of them , you may have a different view.

Roso,

Tavarez Justo was my father's friend.

I remember him just as Tavares Justo, but I thought his name was Manolo, not Manuel. I'll ask my father this Sunday, when we celebrate his 82nd birthday in NYC.

Ricardolito,

There's something that I don't quite understand. If many don't use condoms due to the Catholic Church position, then how come these same people that seem to listen to the church, are willing to have abortions instead? Which one is the lesser of two evils, condoms or abortion?
Written by: Ricardolito, 13 Aug 2009 10:49 PM

I do not know if they are the same people ..all I know is that is that the Roman Catholic church by banning the use of condoms has caused much death in Africa through AIDS and many unwanted pregnancies throughout the world. of course ,in the USA, many if not most Catholics use condoms and so the same problem does not exist to such an extent .
If the Church would actually promote the use of condoms , as do most governments around the world, then the problem of abortions would be far less.

All I see is a vicious cycle of poverty that keeps repeating itself ,and with that come a host of social problems, dropping out of school, illegitimate children that grow into one parent household adults, and those children do the same, because everyone around them is doing the same.Class and socio-economic issues.
The condom ban is insane! if you don't care about birth control, surely you must care about your life? or don't you?

Tavarez Justo's name was Manuel, but his "apodo" was Manolo, as he was affectionately called. He died a wasteful death, lured by what he said in one of his speeches previously and baited by elements that wanted him out of the picture permanently.
Although his movement became too far leftist oriented in the turbulent 60's, and inclined to an extreme form of socialism.
He would have been president for sure and a natural leader, such a shame that one of the most powerful and charismatic leaders of the DR in the 20 TH century, never really had a chance to change things.
