Illegal lumbering to clear lands for pasture near Sabana Iglesia.
Zoom Picture

Santiago.- The civic movement “Tiempo Verde” (Green Time) said the cutting  of trees in the towns San José de las Matas, Sabana Iglesia and Jánico is alarming, and among the most serious ecological crimes taking place in the country.

The organization said the illegal lumbering also ravages Espaillat, Valverde and Dajabón provinces, where some of the permits issued by the Environment Ministry (Semarena) don’t adhere to environmental and sustainable development policies. “Santiago is currently the most corrupt city in the traffic of chopped wood.”

Tiempo Verde said the “Mafia” in Santiago is linked to powerful sectors, which they didn’t identity, and which permanently destroy the forests and the nation’s major river basins. “The complicity manifested is in the illegal wood cutting in Santiago can only take place with the consent of groups of power involved in this business.”

In a statement, the entity also demanded that Semarena, the Provincial Forestry Agency and the Environment Prosecutor confront what they call a serious crime in the Central Cibao.

i have seen a little of this devastation and this is an example of commercial greed that needs to be controlled ..I hope we do not become like Sumatra that has become a total disaster in the area with smoke from burning timber flowing across more than 3 other countries and causing degradation of soil on the island

Where is St. James (aka Jamie David)?

Oh that’s right he is busy saving the environment by approving “Cement Plants” in ecologically sensitive areas, while ratting out Lie-onel Fernandez.

My friend just told me of some military that cut down 200 tareas of Pine forest in Dajabon. Total impunity for him because of his connections. Dajabon is right next to Haiti and its few remaining wooded areas are coming down fast. Dona Jaime is too busy making money and covering his tail(and by tail I do mean his pony tail)....

Perpetrators of felled trees should be forced to plant 10X # of trees they cut, with their bare hands. Furthermore, they should be forced to nurture them for three years.

That will teach them!

SHOOT THEM! Let the "Greenies" and "Spotwatcher" have weapons. Let them be snipers for the environment! SHOOT UNTIL THESE ANIMALS ARE DONE WITH! Felling a Dominican tree is a crime against the fatherland!

Set land mines and explosive devices! Stop them at all cost!

Hey; like drugs and garbage this is a major problem in San Pedro de Marcoris. Go to India and cook on a fire of dried cow shit because there have not been any trees since Marco Polos time.
