Nassau.- Miss Venezuela, Stefania Fernandez, was crowned Sunday night as Miss Universe 2009; Miss Dominican Republic, Ada Aimee de la Cruz, was the first runner up in the 58th edition of the annual pageant, held in the Bahamas this year.

Miss Universe 2008 Dayana Mendoza of Venezuela placed the glittering $120,000 crown on 18-year-old Fernandez. It was the second consecutive year that a contestant from the oil-producing South American country, which is famous for its beauty queens, won the Miss Universe title. Venezuela had produced five previous winners.

The rest of the top five were from Australia, Puerto Rico, and Kosovo. Miss China, Wang Jingyao, was named Miss Congeniality and Miss Thailand, Chutima Durongdej, won Miss Photogenic.

The televised event included musical performances by Flo Rida, Heidi Montag, David Guetta and Kelly Rowland. Hosts were Billy Bush, co-anchor of "Access Hollywood," and Claudia Jordan, former Miss Rhode Island USA who has appeared on several TV shows. Judges include actor Dean Cain and supermodel Valeria Mazza.

Close call for Venezuela, I thought that our Ada Aimee was prettier and had more charisma and savoir faire.
It was a an even match between the two as they were both very strong contenders. I was partial to our representative because she had the most over all charm and was fit to be crowned Miss Universe.
Anyway, first runner up isn't bad, I was kind of disappointed that Miss USA didn't get picked to the last five finalists, I thought she had many qualities.
France and South Africa were also very strong contenders and didn't make it pass the judges.
Considering all the experience, assets and savvy that the Venezuelans put in to winning this beauty contest, a first runner up place is not bad at all for the DR.
Bad omen for Venezuela that the crown was dropped, by the previous miss Universe just before coronation. LOL.

I think you are correct, but I think the answer was also lost in translation.

The fact is the question did her in and she wasn't affirmative in the answer as she should have been.
The question was posed by the devils advocate, an African-american judge spiced with political purposes and racial tones and really did her in.
It was the hardest question to answer and good answer would have been much shorter, the translator was terrible as well. A great answer was non existent but could have been:

Question: Do you believe AIDS testing should be obligatory?
Answer: We as compassionate humans should do everything in our power to help others, help themselves, but being careful not to infringe in the individuals freedom to choose and not be "obligated" to do something that might go against their individual personal or religious beliefs.

Of course I had more time to think about the answer. LOL

This is suppose to be a beauty contest first and foremost. After that fact is determined and established should all of the other human and spiritual qualities take precedence. I don't care how great is her interior beauty but Ms Kosovo should have never reached to become one of the last 5 finalists. Her outer appearance was strange or odd at best. As for Miss DR no doubt that what worked against her was the response. It was a tough question and the translator sucked. Had it not been for that, I am quite sure DR would have won. Her scores were always higher then Miss Venezuela and though for an 18 year old, she projected in her response great maturity and confidence, maybe too much at times as to appear almost cocky, the judges should have given Miss DR the benefit of the doubt. Nevertheless, every year for the last 10 years the Dominican Republic continues to narrow the gap, always with a candidate closer to the crown.

Had she just answered "yes"..or "no", she might have won.
What didn't help either was that "Goodnight Bahamas" stunt, which I believe was out of place at that particularly dramatic moment.

No matter what, congrats, Ada Aimee. You're a great girl.

Just like in sporting events and the olympics being second or last does not really matter that much. The losers have many excuses for not winning, the winners have no excuses. LOL.
In sporting events and all other contests you must have three ingredients to win:
1. You must be world class, well seasoned and coached in other competitions, before the main event.
2. You must be in your best form the day of the contest.
3. You must be lucky.

Ada Aimee was not lucky, she got the worst question to answer, and the "Hello Bahamas" thing, certainly was unnecessary and boastful.

All the girls last evening are winners, every single one of them! Too bad for Miss DR, as she indeed was the overall winner, in my eyes. Regardless, these Big Time Beauty Pagents, are more political than, the decisions made between the IMF and the current DR's PLD admisnistration. btw, Miss Kosovo is a very beautiful women, don't care what others say.

Juango-Come on about Ms Kosovo, I not saying she was ugly, but her beauty was Odd, with that strange hair style it took away from her appearance. But apparently regardless, it worked for her. To me one of the most physically perfect was miss iceland, she was overall most complete, but she barely made it pass the first 15. I am surprise that Mexico and Colombia did not make it to the finals at all. Costa Rica, very pretty but not Miss Universe quality, amazed that they did not send a better candidate to represent them and If I recall i think she was a little over weight for the competition.

The fact is the question did her in and she wasn't affirmative in the answer as she should have been. The question was posed by the devils advocate, an African-american judge spiced with political purposes and racial tones and really did her in.

I have to ask a question of you Generoso. How is the question posed to her a hard question and what does race (African-American) have to do with the question? I have entered dozens of pageants and we are drilled over and over and over again on the same questions asked at this event. We are provided with the best answers to these questions by professionals with many years of experience.
I just do not see how this question was hard or how it was what lost it for her. I also do not see why you interject race in the matter. When I competed, it was mostly African Americans who assisted us latinas, the white girls and others were jealous and did nothing to help and always gave bad advice.

Written by: dominicanasunited, 24 Aug 2009 4:16 PM
From: United States
In these events White girls distance themselves from us latinas. It was always women of African descent that befriended us or we were all alone in our own groups. We latinas were a threat, competition. So I do not know why you try to imply that an African American judge did her in.

She provided a perfect answer, it was her delivery of the answer that was the problem. If anything they provided her with a good question and because she was nervous she screwed up the delivery of the answer. It was not a political question, or asked by the devil. Why is there so much racism in this forum?

To be fair, the 5 finalists should be asked the same question(s). One at the time, with the others away so that they don't know the question(s). They could call one finalist at the time, she does a last walk for the jury and public, and answers the question(s)...

Unlatino-You are absolutely and positively right. That is the only and the best way to be fair to all the girls. Why should one contestant get an easy question but the other a hard one. I believe it use to be done that way. Anyway, it is the best way for the judges to compare the responses for the same question among all of the contestants.

Tainoloco-"donald trump really does not like latinas" - I Would tend to agree. Donald has a preference for blonde eastern european women. His ex-wife Ivana was from Czechoslovakia and most of his recent girl friends are from that region of the world. I notice that an unusual number of the contestants that ended up as semi-finalists, were from eastern europe, which to me was questionable. Even though Donald is the owner of the pageant, I doubt that he would actually fix the results, but I would not be surprised if he would sway the results in his favor for what ever reason that would dim his fancy.

Give it up Brasil, troll, you are the one wanting to bring race into this thread where myself, or nobody else was referring to discrimination, or racism, and only providing a narrative of the factual events.
Should I translate for you?: here is my statement before you tried to twist the meaning around, troll:

The question was posed by the devils advocate, (meaning a person that might have wanted to favor her for being black, but instead hurt her the most) "an African-american judge" (description of the judge, could have been Nordic viking type or Chinese Mongolian), "spiced with political purposes and racial tones and really did her in".(The aids subject in Africa (black continent) is a very political and religious subject with much controversy, from religious banning the use of condoms to forcing people to be tested). I am talking about the question only. Duh, duh, duh.

As Queen Elizabeth was told when she watched the America's Cup race at the Newport Yacht Club in the early 1980's and, after being told that the American yacht "courageous had won, she asked:"who came in second place"? The club commodore politely replied: "your majesty, with all due respect, in this sport there is no second place"! That could be an appropriate statement here as well.

Obviously, we are all sore our girl didn't win. Looking at picture No. 2 in above sequence, one would be very hard pressed to state that the winner was undeserving, however.

As in every olympics, I have a tendency to put aside patriotic fervor and cheer the competitors for their hard work and achievement. That's good sportsmanship and appreciation of good and tough competition. Strictly in my opinion, that's the way it should be.

A first place runner up is not bad at all, but its bad when she deserved the crown and did not get it because she was robbed from it. Ada was one of the favorites since the beginning. She received the highest points in the evening gown, second in swinsuit, and her answer wasnt the best but it wasnt the worse. I have no idea why she was not given her crown when she worked so hard for it. none of the 5 contestant answered the question that was asked. could it be racism? only they know but it will cost the contest its reputation! Ada Aimeé speaks like a true queen and is not a sore loser, in her statements by phone to the press:

Hey anthonyc,

Divinna didn't enlighten you, but I will. Miss Dominican Republic scored more points than Miss Venezuela in the swim suit and night gown segment. Although Miss Dominican Republic came in second place in the swim suit segment, she still scored more points than Miss Venezuela. When it came time for the question-and-answer round, Miss Dominican Republic didn't give the best response, but niether did Miss Venezuela. The judge asked her what could women do to break the barrier between men and women? She answered by saying that there is no longer a barrier for women to achieve what men has achieved. I think her answer was unacceptable. No more barriers? I don’t expect beauty queens to be Nobel Peace Prize winners, but if she truly thinks women across the globe are treated equally and face no barriers, she has to be an idiot. She could use her platform to highlight the atrocities committed against women globally, but how can she do that if she isn’t even aware?

In a earlier post, I mentioned how it is well known that Mr Trump is bias toward eastern european women and how he might have possibly swayed votes to favor those candidates, due to a higher then usual number of finalist selected from that region of the world.

Well, coincidentally Miss Venezuela though born in So America happens to have Eastern European ancestry. Her mother Nadia Krupij Holojad is of Russian, Ukrainian and Polish descent. Was that just and simply a coincidence or what? Now some one tell me that it was only a fluke or am I a conspiracy theorist? Had DR scored lower in the night gown and swim suit categories, I would agreed about the coincidence, but not in this particular case. Some one slightly tipped the scales against Miss DR.

East Europe consist of the following ten countries: Belarus, Bulgaria, Czech Republic, Hungary, Moldova, Poland, Romania, Russia, Slovakia, Ukraine. Check out how many fanalist were from these ten plus all the newly formed countries in EU

It always amazes me that those of you who cry racism over every little thing that involves whites never seem able to recognize your own blatant racism. Just read the anti-white comments.
Why do you think it is not racist for you to say things such as Way too white! when a white person would be villified if he were to say "way too black or way too brown"? Also, why do you never notice the things that are heavy with people of color and almost completely void of whites - such as the professional basketball and football teams? Racism is alive and well in this world; unfortunately the biggest racists are often those crying Racism the loudest. It is time for the race card to be put to rest and let all things be awarded on basis of MERIT.
