Santo Domingo.– The Dominican airspace is safe, according to the Dominican Civil Aviation Institute (IDAC), which also pointed out that the fact that there is a radar or not in an airport does not compromise security.

The National Pilots Association had complained that the radar at the Punta Cana International Airport was not functioning properly. Francisco Bolivar Leon, IDAC director of air navigation, said that last January the radar at Punta Cana suffered a failure for data over-saturation, but technicians of Thales, the manufacturing company, corrected the problem immediately.

As soon as the technical evaluation is finished, the Punta Cana radar will work at full capacity; so far it is only been used to follow aircraft due to security reasons, Leon explained.

"The IDAC feels bad about the statements which say that the local airspace is dangerous. We want to stress it is not like that, the airspace in the Dominican Republic is safe," highlighted Leon.

I find the title of the article humorous: "Report reveals Dominican airspace is safe."

What does the report "reveal" actually. What do they mean by that and what were they doing before? Hiding information about safety, keeping it quiet and behind close doors? They did not want anybody to know about how safe we are, but now we provide "revealing" information. Come on now!!

The airspace may be safe, but the ground sure isn't.

Good news, but this is only temporary. DR Airspace will continue to be safe, only until the Super Tucanos arrive in the hands of the FAD ! Then WATCH OUT !

Why do i have a problem with a positive report made by IDAC ??

(If it just was backed up by an international team, it would be so much trustfull)

atteo and maggiolo,

You are both great patriots.

This statement is devoid of all credibility, strictly based on non-credible source: IDAC-what a joke!

I would like to know Mr. Bolivar Leon's qualifications for this job. Is it cronyism?

Could PC Group do something about this and perhaps take radar operations private? Heck, couldn't be much worse than what gov is doing.

No airspace serving International or domestic flights is safe without a fully functional radar system! Flight following and aircraft seperation is a must at busy airports and Punta Cana is no exception.
