Santiago.– Authorities dismantled a network of drug dealers that was operating out of the main cemetery in this northern city in the Dominican Republic, the Drugs Control Agency (DNCD) reported.

According to Abel Rojas, the regional spokesman for the DNCD, 1.5 kilograms of cocaine were seized from the band. The arrested people were identified as Francisco Manuel Ceballos, Jose Luis Rodriguez, Carlos Augusto Rodriguez and Orlando Antonio Polanco, as well as Haitians Elien Papitte and Yenny Louis, who were living in the country without proper legal documents.

Rojas said the members of the band distributed drugs to people who pretended to go to the cemetery to visit loved ones’ graves. After arresting the six people, authorities placed a discrete surveillance team around the cemetery to ensure the safety of employees and visitors.

Why the death penalty for the Haitains ? because they are involved in the drug trade in a country not their own ? using that school of thought , the more than one thousand Dominicans in U.S. jails on drug charges should face the same fate ?

This was just a drop in the bucket. I am now beginning to beleive the DR has made it through the recession and continues to survive mainly on drug money. Everywhere you look there is drug and corruption money. The hard working people are the ones barely able to put food on the table.

veronica,
mainly on drug money??? hahaha
what about the visa that they collect daily for tourist that come into DR?
The high level of telecom taxes that they collect? DR is one of the most expensive countries to call to.
The high taxes that they charge the airlines, DR is also one of the countries with the highest airline taxes.
The high tax cost that they collect when you import a vehicle from USA
Do I need to continue???
Also, the recession is not over, it will be over when businesses are back to the levels that we had a few years ago

Picture doesn't match story.

What the heck is in those bags-illegal cement?

If that were a cocain haul it would be more than a few tons, instead of a mere 1.5 kg.

I tell you that DRUGS are such a huge issue in DR that it is going to take several yrs for the officials to really put a dent in the drug trade. The problem is that there is too much loose ends that can be exploited. Only if the gov't officials really take it very serious that a control can be place, but it won't happen because too many hands get wet ($$) :)))))))

How convenient to deal drugs at a cemetery, Because that's were you'll end up using and abusing anyway. Over dose, Robbery, rip-off [Bani] related Murders etc..etc.. and other drug related crimes not to mention the suffering Families of the users.

Xwill7,

I wonder what is the current % of Tax on a Auto imported from the U.S ?

Not to mention approx. $5,000.00 shipping cost with Ins. from Long beach or Miami, plus Dominican auto Registration fees.

And five working days for travel to Santo Domingo.

From what I'm told. Correct Me if I'm wrong.
