Santo Domingo.– Motorcycle owners and drivers have five days left to install mufflers on their bikes, a measure aimed at reducing the high noise levels of the city, announced Environment Minister Jaime David Fernandez Mirabal and the director of the Metropolitan Transport Authority (AMET) General Rafael Oscar Bencosme Candelier.

After the deadline, the motorcycles without mufflers will be confiscated, as defined by Environment Law 64-00, which establishes fines and confiscation of equipment for those contributing to noise contamiantion, Fernandez Mirabal explained.

According to the official, cars and motorcycle owners tend to shorten the ends of their mufflers in order to attract attention with their disturbing noises.

I wonder if they will confiscate the Harley-Davidsons of the local Hell's Angels or those belonging to the wealty or middle class. Harleys can be louder than those cheap Japanese and Chinese 125 cc bikes.

Hell...without the noise....how will you see them at night?

i love this country...really I do. But when they think that mufflers on a bike is a priority and lights are not....one has to wonder what the logic is.

Again...today in La Romana, while 10;s of bikes (of course without helmets and carrying 3 people, with no visible lighting), doorless vans, rotted out Corollas and the likes drove past AMET...they found it necessary to stop every vehicle 5 years or newer, to check for papers.

Is it really about safety...or is it about money???

AMET...it is your move.

Dr. Dread,

Where have you been lately?

Miss your intelligent and incisive commentary.

Forum needs more contributors like you and a few notable others, as intellectual, incisive and respectful discussions appear on decline.

Are you kidding me mufflers; the authority should go after the several thousand drug dealers and thugs that exist in DR. People such as myself from NY can't even visit and enjoy without fearing for my life!!!

it seems like the pessimistic people in here are having trouble making "good excuses" for the great job our president and the municipio D.N has done in the last years!

This is too extreme a punishment.

Why not just issue a fine? That's what other civilized cuntries typically would do. Sorry, operative word is "civilized"; perhaps an ianppropriate term for DR.

Why confiscate an individual's mode of transportation and instrument for earning a living?

Why not address issue instead by issuing summons and facilitate affordable means for redressing situation? That would be "win/win" outcome. Perhpas much too clever for those ignoramus in power.

This headline is just more grandstanding BS. They will enforce the ban for a few days and impound and keep some poor fellows bikes, and then, as an excuse keep the bikes for themselves.
The policemen or military that go around with no mufflers will not get stopped or fined, or the ones with a "padrino" or some big shot's minister or high official card's will not be bothered either.
They should allow private citizens to shoot those noisy bikers with sling shots, BB guns, or hit them with a baseball bat and then they will stop this maddening habit.
While they are at it, they should also confiscate all the bikes that travel at night with no rear lights, do they do this on purpose or what?

This is Great News. I live in Jarabacoa and you can’t have a conversation in my living room due to all the noise from all these jokers that think it’s cool. It’s all about getting attention!!! Hopefully they will get some attention from the LAW.

Laws are made to benefit the pols and the police. This one is so a cop can get a neat new moto when he sees one, and some pol's primo who just went into the muffler business to catch the fallout. They've done this before, yet still the noise persists. And it will again when the cops get their shiny new bikes and the pols' primo has his Yipeta.

The situation is that the authorities will sell them back to the public without mufflers and the problem will continue the same as before.

Don't they bother me with that BS.

What about the battered trucks that spit out more carbon than the Exxon Valdez did oil?

Citizen's arrest should be legal here.

I was stopped by AMET for not using my seat belt, I admit I was guilty of the haneous crime. I asked the officer why the 20 publicos that passed us didn't have to use thier seat belts and his answer was that if they try to enforce the law on the publicos and busses that they will go on HUELGA. OH, now we have selective law enforcement?

AMET has nothing to do with keeping the citizens safe. It's all about $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$
like always all acrost the GOVT. board.

Walterpolo,

FYI, publico drivers and bus and truck drivers are exempt from seatbelt laws.
