The entire nation expects President Fernandez do 'something' on August 16.
Zoom Picture

Santo Domingo.- The National Business Council president’s energetic speech, strikes by health professionals and a new calls to protest by various organizations which demand action against corruption continue battering the Government this week, while there’s no end in sight to the tenuous energy and water services.

The arrogant statements against the social organizations and the media which denounce corruption and demand punishment for embezzlers of taxpayers’ money and improved services seem to stoke the confrontation, as lawmakers hastily seek to conclude the long process of approving a new Constitution.

July’s final week has been devastating for president Leonel Fernandez’s Administration, pushed against the ropes by denunciations of corruption, social protests and demands as the precarious energy, potable water and hospital services reach critical levels.

The business leadership heightened its criticism, health professionals resumed their more than a year-long struggle for a wage increase by abandoning the public hospitals and the calls for popular protests continue.

The latest blow came from within the State itself, when the Accounts Chamber agreed with the embezzlement denunciations, affirming that in most of the 154 audits conducted this year it detected violations to the Purchases and Contracting Law, tax evasions and other irregularities, while its president Licelott Marte complained that the Justice Ministry doesn’t penalize corruption.

Nothing will change, till the people of the DR want it to change ! He should get the Mel (Zelaya) treatment. Perhaps there is a strong Military General that has the courage to help LF pack his bags. It is time for a little shakeup, dont you think?

The revolution is slowly coming.
When the poor don't have the money to buy food that's when the ropes begin to break.
You cannot keep the population drunk on Brugal and Presidente during an election any more, slowly the population is sobering up and finding out that their money is being spent by corrupt officals at the top.
Leonel and your cronies your days are numbered.

Jim:

Unfortunately you can keep the population under control by denying them an education. That way they believe that they have to depend on the largesse of the government. Once they believe that they are dependent, they are. Educate the poor, let them learn how to make a living and show them the opportunities that are available and they will never again allow a government to abuse them as ALL previous governments have done. EDUCATE THE PEOPLE, NOW!!!

As bad a situation as we think Obama inherited, it was probably far worse. Obama is an itelligent (Harvard is maybe the best College in the US) man. Smart is good. Bush was dumb. Dumb is bad. Despite the crying and slanderous claims of the Republicans the economy is slowly improving. Employment is still getting worse but I believe that A) had the Republicans won, the world, not just the US would be in desperate shape, and B) programs such as cash for clunkers are slowly turning around and improving the economy not only of the US but the world, as well.

DR has always been typically "volatile": a big splash in the media about anything, talk of the town for a few weeks and then, nothing. Maybe that's what they were hoping for. All the scandals would slowly fade away on their own. And nobody would get hurt.

Only, now, it looks like it´s not going to happen.

Now let’s see;

Lie-onel Fernandez and "Corruption Incorporated" aka the PLD have lost the support of the:

1. The Dominican masses especially the middleclass
2. The Business community
3. The Catholic Church

Other than the support of the fanatical Lie-onelita Apologists who post here at DT, it appears the dark storm clouds of irrelevance and defeat are gathering around the PURPLE PESTILNCE and “The greatest president the republic has produced.”

Each day they become more isolated from reality in thier METROLANDIA!

Regarding Palin: it seems clear most major U.S of A media's can't stand her, so they print and most People believe....[ one can't believe everything one reads ]....When you ask, why ? they respond with "AHH AHH..... JUST BECAUSE!!" just goes to show you People can't stand a STAND STRONG BY YOUR BELIEFS KINDA WOMAN [ those who stand for nothing will far for anything ], at least I know where she stands and agree !

while the leader you must favor thinks by buying HOPE & CHANGE with the U.S tax payers money at there expense, He thinks He's a sure winner in 2012, if the U.S of A is still STANDING. "UNITED SOCIALIST STATES OF AMERICA"

I think that , in case many people reading these pages think that all is going badly here in the DR, the opposite is the case although everyone is very frustrated at the disclosures of mal administration, unbelievable priorities and corruption that are dismissed or ignored by the President ..
In fact , the economy has stood up very well and is much better than eastern European countries or even England and maybe we ill even avoid negative growth. The GDP has been assisted by some loans on good terms from overseas countries and also because many tourists have been coming here instead of Mexico.
There are concerns that the loans will be used for general spending rather than for capital projects and there is great concern that electricity in this very hot month is not available for much of the day.
it is unbelievable that the growth in GDP over the last years has brought nothing to the general public who have seen no improvement in their living standards.

Above you stated what is the fundamental issue my smart friend!

Trickle down economics doesn’t work, until there is a financial crisis then you will see how quickly the losses trickle down to the masses. I.e. Socialism for the rich and capitalism for the poor!

And now the revolution is online!

Social networking used to protest

Young Dominicans are associating to protest corruption and impunity in government. Mostly university students and recent graduates, Dominican youths from middle income and upper income levels have joined to support several organizations whose leaders have taken an upfront position to protest the inefficiencies of government at all levels and in all branches.
El Dia reports that at a time when Dominican society in general appeared to accept rampant corruption, clientelism, lack of principles and quick-making of a buck as normal, the youth groups have come forth to lobby for a change.
The groups use blogs, social networking and mobile phone communication to get their messages across. The 85% rejection rate the Los Haitises cement plant project received from Dominicans polled for the recent Gallup-Hoy poll can be in great part attributed to these movements.

The free zones look like ghost towns. More businesses are closing every day. Restaurants, normally a good indicator of the condition of the economy are disappearing at a frightening rate. The few very rich are getting richer. The rest are living more poorly than ever. Government corruption is at unparalleled levels. The President and his fellow PLD thieves think the public will continue to accept a summit to discuss ideas as a solution. The pueblo is wising up. Electricity is worse than ever and the same crook remains in office with the help of his buddy LF. The thieves of the PRD are anxiously awaiting their turn to pilllage the treasury. And as for the loans that we are accepting to bail us out on a short term level, please understand that the % of gov't income that goes to service the national debt has risen from 20% to 44%.Things are worse than they look, not better.

josean the reason why GDP has grown over the past 3 or 4 years and yet the general living standards have not improved is because of the government spending priorities ..For general living standards to improve in this country , there is a need for fresh water, sanitation , cheap education , 24 hour electricity and cheap food. but in many barios there is not a good supply of fresh water , constant disruptions of electricity and bad sanitation.
I am sure there has been an increase in the people who would describe themselves as middle class and this is the result of a growing economy but the overwhelming number of people in the DR are still poor and lack essential services . Hence my comment

Regarding Obama at first i did not agree with some of his change claims. I thought that maybe an elder statesman would be best to lead us then...I started looking at the larger picture. His plan is not to jumpstart the economy instantly he is laying plans for long term changes. Japan did it, japan after WW2 invested on technology and science americans were stuck in industrilization. USA is being shaking up and al ot of Obamas plans make sense long term. They will not work next month but changes will be noticed down the line. Education is always the best way to get out of a slump. Educate ur citizens and innovations will happen creating new jobs, money etc....and thats where DR we do need a different kind of leader with no connections to the old way of leading. No more balaguerism (or trujilloism)..Heck vote for Obama to lead DR there needs to be a new way of thinking and should start with the people. IF dominicans get educated on the issues and are involve there is no option but chnge

"JUMPSTART" the economy are you serious.....7 Months later and correct me if I'm wrong, but 34 Trillion dollars in total debt. The only thing I see is...."the March is on track", on the road to what ? SOCIALISM, it's all about CONTROL. I tend to believe that's not what America wants once they see the light. As far as Japan is concern, they had no choice no Constitution no Economy after the War they were desolate.
The only long term I see is "2012"....Education....If you lost it I'll help you find it, I work for a School and with Budget cuts this year alone...If you think the DR needs an Oh'Blama type, be serious ! I could see it now SUPER DUPER TAXES on DOMINICANO'S.

Thats funny the recent polls on CNN showed that people don't mind the extra taxes..face it there is no new money the money has to come from somewhere. The polls were regarding the health care system and the result was in favor of the new tax to fund the reforms but people want a clearer description on what exactly the reforms will include. 7 months will not fix what was being doing since clintons 2nd term. I don't know what wnt on before clintons 2nd term i was not concious of politics or old enough to be involve in it.
Japan while recnsrtng and with the funds provide by other countries invest a lot in tech whether they had no constitution or structure it does not matter their invest as wll finalnd andother small countires in reasearch and development is paying off. What i see from a lot of is being done is investment in future not now. All the spending being is to not let the economy sink further also the reforms and bills being suggesed or passed are for later on (again just my Op)
