Santo Domingo.- Airlines are twice charging airport taxes and fees which aren’t even reported to the Government, in the cases when passengers miss their flights and have to buy another ticket in the same or another carrier.

Travel agents who requested anonymity quoted by diariolibre.com say in addition to paying the taxes twice, passengers who lose their flight must pay the carrier’s penalty if they reschedule their trip, which in many cases costs more than the airfare even if it’s for the same day and on the same airline. "The Government acquires the fees per passenger transported, and a passenger who has paid the tax often loses their flight and must buy them again to travel."

They asked the Civil Aviation Board to establish that when a passenger pays the tax and airport fee on a ticket and doesn’t immediately use it, to credit the taxes when acquiring another.

Why is anybody shocked?

This is just another fine example of sad state of corruption and lawlessness in DR.

I suspect that several government officials are on the take on this issue; that's why practice continues unabated.
