The two suspects, Pedro Jorge Hernández, Tirso Otañez arrested near Las Terrenas.

Santo Domingo.- The Drugs Control Agency (DNCD) on Thursday said a unidentified airplane dropped at least 14 packages of cocaine in the Las Terrenas, Samaná province, the first airdrop ever reported along Dominican Republic’s Atlantic coast, which are commonplace along the Caribbean nation’s southern and eastern shores .

The antinarcotics entity said its Tactical Reaction Unit detected the illegal incursion into Dominican airspace and contacted the Navy, which sent a patrol boat to the area where the drug estimated at more than 400 kilos was found.

It also reported the arrest of Pedro Jorge Hernández, 37, and Tirso Otañez, 50, on the road between the nearby town Sánchez and the village Majagual, although it didn’t specify if the two individuals are linked to the case.

The DNCD said it also requested the Air Force’s assistance to continue with the search for other possible drug packages airdropped along the country’s northeast coast.

After the confiscation, the DNCD said it set up several checkpoints on land to detain potential local associates of the traffickers which transported the cocaine, adding that it seized 14 packages of the drug of an unspecified weight from the two suspects arrested.

The DNCD reported the arrest of Fausto Andrés Mercedes, Pedro Alexander Mota, Daniel Esteban Álvarez and Luciano Calcaño, and the assistance of a helicopter from Puerto Rico-based Task Force, of the U.S. Southern Command.

The legal system here in the D.R. is simply crazy. They arrest these two guys, plaster their fotos all over the D.R. and here for the world to see, and there is not an ounce of evidence discussed demonstrating that they had any thing to do with these drugs.

Pedro Jorge Hernández, and Tirso Otañez, were simply on the road between the nearby town Sánchez and the village Majaguar, thats it. Where's the "probable cause" to arrest them as opposed to someone else in the area? Without additional evidence, this simply makes no sense to me.

These two Dominicans appear to be innocent bystanders in the wrong place at the wrong time.

Duh!!! You already told them where you will be watching for drug shipments. Did anyone really think that they wouldn't be smart enough to change their drop off points.

I am not a consumer of narcotic.
The conflict which authority leads against the traffickers leads to nothing.
You cannot forbid in 80 % of the population not to buy this product.
This history makes me think in USAS in years 20-30 then which alcohol was forbidden.
And this makes me think of conflict in the cigarette that the government leads us.
It is more and more easy to find some tobacco in $10 the packet.

Sorry Antonio, it is impossible to overdose on marijuana.
However, the scourge of the cocaine trade, with the associated crime and corruptive ability of cash is very dangerous to the DR. A silent war taking place with many helping hands.
Best to try very hard, with US help, to deter the criminals from using the DR as a transport route. The major suppliers will always search for the easiest route to get their product into the US.
I don't think this country is prepared to defend itself. in this battle, and it is a war that it can not afford to lose.

Drug-related violence is endemic in Puerto Rico. Heroin and marijuana are the most widely abused illicit drugs in the PR/USVI HIDTA region.

Corruption among local law enforcement officers has been an ongoing problem throughout the PR/USVI HIDTA for many years; federal authorities uncovered and addressed significant drug-related police corruption in the region.

However small, clearly another positive step toward eradicating drug traffic.

Let's see how the story evolves and if these individuals will be tried, convicted and commensurately incarcerated. Only then, would critical faith in our government and judicial system begin to be restored.

The attorney's general of this country they're all corrupts, only Dominican and tourist with lots of money get a way with breaking the law, it.s a very nice country, but the system sucks. Until then be careful my friend.

The better use of immagination my come from the question.... just who will be in charge of the evidence?

I see it filtering into the illicit revenue stream long before this case gets to court....

I was told by a local that it was 500kg, they 'dumped' it near Punta Popy instead of their agreed beach, a fisherman retrieved cargo and handed it over to the local bobbies, if the guys who were arrested on the road to Sanchez were 'en la loma', they may well be guilty bearing in mind the time of night, but I have to agree that their names shouldn't have been publicised if no-one can say that they're linked to the crime, having said that, the article does go on to say that they had 14 packages of the drug - weight unspecified - on them, so they do deserve being arrested whether connected to the 'drop' or not.
