The win by Julissa Ferreiras was no surprise.

NEW YORK.- Of the 17 who sought the post of Councilperson, only three Dominicans - a man and two women - were tapped as the Democratic Party candidates in the November 4 elections.

The winners are Ydanis Rodriguez in district 10 in Upper Manhattan; Julissa Ferreiras in Queens, who obtained the highest voting with 66% and the councilman Diana Reyna, chosen by a close margin to seek the post again.

There was no surprise regarding Rodriguez, who’ll replace Miguel Martinez in the post as of November 5, since his followers as well as the community expected a landslide win. He won with 4,785 votes or 59% and his closest contender, the Italian Richard Realmuto, had 1,189 ballots cast, or 15%.

The other six Dominicans who competed in district 10 were Manny Velázquez, with 788 votes for 9,88%, Rubén Darío Vargas (421 or 5%), Francesca Castellanos (271 or 3%), Cleás Sarete (206 or 3%), Francisco Spies (162 voters or 2%) and Luis Facundo, with 155 or 3%.

Its wonderful to have representatives from the same ethnicity as our own.

Rodriguez spoke to the media and I hate to say that he sounded unfit to represent us, he has no eloquence.

Hopefully, the American people(voters) won't be so myopic to deny an opportunity to candidates due to their party affliation. Judge them as individuals who will fight to bring about meaningful changes to their communities, be they Republicans, Independents or Democrats.

Ydanis has been a perennial candidate of the council for numerous years. As far back as I can remember, Ydanis has been in the polls and its his first victory. Congratulations to him. Although I do agree with the post on his eloquence but maybe he can pick this up from the others hopefully. As for Miguel, the one thing that he did that was in concert with what some speculate as a normal phenomenon in the DR is that he was caught committing fraud (and admitted to it). So as with the sentiment on this site, any corruption should be dealt with accordingly. Congrats to the new legislators and hope that you do not follow the footsteps of some of your compatriots.

I thought to run for office in another country, you must be a citizen of that country. Thus Dominicans running for office in the United Staes must be Americans....am I correct????

puntacanamike,
yes you are correct. However, in the city council you are allowed to be a citizen by naturalization. By naturalization, I mean one that has been made a citizen but not born in that country. Also, remember that America is inherently a country made up of people from all over the world. Naturally, this will be reflected in their politics. I have a few friends that are currently politicians in the US and are not born there.

Either way the Dominican's who are Demo's and Socialistic like Blaa Blaa Oh'Blama.....end result we all lose.

Can I say is....or shall I repeat....."Give a Man fish, he'll eat, then He'll want more free fish" = DEPENDENCY on the Gov. =Control, restriction and Gov. Regulation = Socialism.

"Teach a man to fish, He becomes self reliant" and Independent from Gov.= FREE ENTERPRISE = Real FREEDOM TO CHOOSE= American.

An American is.....not a Demo or Rep. or Color, Ethnicity, Gender, Religion.
To be an American symbolizes a way of life FREEDOM !

Let's HOPE these Dominican Demo's stand on there own Beliefs and 912, not follow the blind Leader.

well, mrios, you left out one variable in your maritime bromide: the guys who neither give a man a fish, nor teach him the craft. the ones who believe that God made the world for some people, and only some people , to enjoy, while others become their slaves minions, while working themselves to death for less than a living wage. the ones who believe that only certain pigments are acceptable, especially for positions of leadership, only for singing and dancing for massa. those guys are called Republicans. they all pray for Obama to fail, so they can say "well, we gave the darkie a chance, and he proved that they are not up to the task"

My friend Color is not the issue.....It's not the Messenger but the message that matters.
That's MAN's interpretation not God's.
Who's Bible was used for the OH'Blama's swearing in ? or do you care to know.
Had it not been for the interpretation of the U.S Constitution OH'Blama would never be Prez in the first place.
It would be wise to leave the Past / History in the past and Slavery where it belongs, to assume the guilt trip [ race card ] on Modern times is way off.
Take a trip back to Modern times, one can not live in the past and expect things to change, it's like a taking 2 steps back and 1 forward.
The MTV awards is a classic example, what if the Colors were reversed ?
One can not take responsibility for the past abuses nor use the past as an excuse.

Wake up...If Oh'Blama fails it's all on Him not the Republicans, OH'Blama needs to take Responsibility..... 14.5 Trillion Debt as of 9-30-09.

mrios, i am a little weary of hearing the old saw that if there was racism in America, Obama would not have been elected. i am not worried about the decent white folks who voted for him. i refer to what scholars characterise as the "last stand of the angry white man".people like CabareteWilliam, who is not American, and does not live there, but spends every waking hour of his life starting a new thread of negativity. and what is this about whose bible he was sworn in on? is there such a thing in the USA as a state religion?

Dreadlocks,
I'm also equally weary of those who label those who don't agree with OH'Blama Racist.

"last stand, angry White Men" who do you mean ?

X-Prez Carter and Bill Cosby are two of the latest examples.
Election Break down...
98% Afro-American voted for OH'Blama "First Black Prez."
78% White voted for OH'Blama, Bush Haters, Liberal Demo's.
68% American-Latino's voted for OH'Blama due to Immigration change. SWING-VOTE.
Come 2012 the American-Latinos will swing in the RIGHT direction.
Being American-Latino and not agreeing with OH'Blama's Foreign & Domestic Policies. am I a Racist ?
If so, OH'Blama being half White & Black, am I a racist against His White or Black side ?
The Bible I'm referring too was Lincolns, SYMBOLIC GESTURE only.
More then Half of the original signers of the U.S Constitution were JUDEA-CHRISTIANS "One nation under God" not equal nor over GOD. The entrance of the U.S Supreme Court has a Statute of Moses with the Ten Commandments in hand.

THE ALIENABLE RIGHT THAT ALL MEN ARE CREATED EQUAL, AND ARE A IMAGE OF GOD. Color is never mentioned, IS IT.
Yes People are angry including Myself. This CHANGE THING is not what many in America envisioned.
I and many in America were never Slave owners. It was the U.S Constitution that paved the way for American's of color to rise above.
Last night I saw a Commercial on Fox News with OH'Blama calling for Men to take responsibility and become Father's to their Children.....To bad OH'Blama's Father wasn't alive to hear and see it.
The last time OH'Blama was in Africa OH'Blama refused to visit His Father's Birth Place...
Yeah ! people are angry....
Example:
Think for a minute....Iran is close to producing a NUCLEAR BOMB, WITH MISSILE CAPABILITIES, and the ever threat of North Korea's Nuclear capabilities [TARGET U.S], guess what OH'Blama did..."JUNKS BUSH'S MISSILE DEFENSE PLAN"...I'm sure many will sleep good tonight knowing that. North Korea's missile capabilities? i love Republicans . they claim that the Soviet Union crumbled because of Reagan's buildup, which assured the "commies" of their destruction, should they dare attack the USA. do you really believe that North Korea wants to get obliterated any more than the Soviet Union did? Kim is no fool. only the western media like to think so. he knows that if he fires a missile in the direction of the Usa, Korea will be a footnote in history. and, since you do not know who angry white men are, let me list a few

I am very happy to see more Dominicans getting involved in the political process in the U.S. that way they can taste the inclusive system that the U.S. offers to everyone regardless of their background, color, religion or whether they are offsprings of illegal immigrants or groups that are marginalized, minoritized and mistreated just because they are taught not to be co-contributor to enrichment of the country. You see in the U.S. you can even arrive illegally as a child and get eventually get your documents and become a naturalized citizen and you have the ability to run for public office and hold high level jobs. At the same time, the authorities in the U.S. are not questioning your background or your parents' background to determine if you can get documents. This is exactly what is going on in the DR right with the Hiatian migrants, dominican born haitians and mixed dominican-haitians children. mrios, the fact that Beck and company are behaving the way they are is simply eroding their message. I happen to watch O'Riley and often buy his books, but he is so one sided that at times it simply old and very radical making the independent voters like me very nervous and afraid of the Republicans. I have indicated to my republican friends when they ask me that how come we Hispanics do not vote for republicans when our values are closer with republicans than democrats. my answer to this is Beck, Limbaugh, O'riley, Hannity and more. The republican base is very anti-immigrant and very anti anything that does not look anglo saxon, that is the reason why they do not get our votes. Their message is too divisive and too white (american) for my taste, so I will lean democrat next time and for many years to come until I do not see a shift in politics of hate and fear by the republicans. BTW i voted to Bush last time around, so I am not new to this. I happen to love Christ Matthews.

Dagtag,
Beck and the others aren't against Emigrants but against Illegal Emigrants. In America all Parents, Grandparents and Great Grandparents come from some where. American is a Country based on Laws.
All have the right to Migrate to American legally and later after proving good Citizenship have the right to petition to become a Naturalized U.S Citizens, many choose to ignore that fact.
Many choose to Break the Law by over staying there Visas thus Violating Federal Laws. Many Latino's enter the U.S illegally.
OH'Blama's Aunt was ordered twice by a Federal Judge to leave the Country but refused, meanwhile She lived in a Federally funded housing project.
Many Latino-American's saw OH'Blama's plight as an opportunity for Emigration re-form plain and simple.
Let's look at some of the issues...
Many Latino-American's are hard workers.
Many Latino's in America are very family oriented.
Many Latino's threw their Religions are against Abortion.

Many Latino's who become Naturalized U.S Citizens are more proud to be Americans then Natural born Americans.
Many not all Latino's especially from Mexico believe that New Mexico, Arizona, California, Texas, Nevada and parts of Utah and Oklahoma are in a sense part of their Historic Homeland. The land grab of the 1840's MANIFEST DESTINY Sea to shining Sea by then Prez. Polk. Check out a Documentary Film called "Los Mineros" by PBS a real eye opener.
Many Latinos by simply Moral Values are Republican minded People. The trick is to open there eyes to those fact. AMERICA land of Opportunity.
That swing vote I talked about....wait until 2012 The Latino vote will "SWING".
Former Prez. Bush was the only Prez. who realized this fact and pulled a Large % of the Latino Vote and won.
Most Latino's in America today are not Liberal minded People to begin with any way.
In California with the current water / farming situation are ready for a real Change in 2012.

The fact that people like you are not even capable of calling our president by his righful name is disrepectful and unamerican. You must first learn how to disagree with someone and not resort to offesinve comments which is something the republicans are lacking these days. The fact that mexican consider the guadalupe hidalgo treaty territories as theirs has been discussed here ectensively by me in the past. It is not only a disagreemtn with illegal migration. it is the fact that republicans do not like the new migration to the U.S. they see these brown people as less intelligent and capable as those of europeen decent. I do not see the republicans talking about deporting the increasing number of illegal eastern europan immigrants and of iberian decent moving to many cities in the south. The only concentration here is the brown people, do not be blinded by the curtain that it is about illegal migration and not race. I belive that it is a combicantion of both, more the race factor plays a greater roloe than the act itself. The republicans are fully aware that our country is able to absorb the 12 million illegals that are in the country right now with no effect whatsover, but their issue is the kind of imigrant, that we are talking about. my vote or the majority of the millions up for grabs out there. The fact that Bush got the Hispanic vote is becuase Bush was in fact the most comprehensive reform republican president to come by in terms of immigration. During the Bush years the number of new visas granted increased by 200% and he often showed a sensitive side to immigrantion, unlike his congress of conservative texan districts. That is the reason why he got the vote, at this point no one in the republican party is going to get the hispanic or african amarican vote, so the democrats just need a small 35% of the white vote to win any national election.

Dagtan,
I'm cut to the chase....
The word Illegal Emigrant in the U.S is synonymous with Illegal Mexicans only, never mind the Thousands of Federal Law breakers from Europe, Africa, Asia, Canadian and a host of other Central & Latin American Country's.
In my opinion I believe the word Hispanic's means one's Loyalty to Espana thus the word Hispaniola meaning from Spain, also the word Latino refers to our Italian Heritage threw most Latino's Religion...Catholicism.
OH'Blama: means... the "OH" part shock, Radical Drastic change. Blama means Blaa Blaa TelePrompter Prez. sounds good, reads great and always makes His speeches sound like a Campaign add. I respect the Office of the Prez. make no mistake about it, excuse ME ! the same respect they showed Bush while Prez.

mrios we are not in high school so there is no need to remind or try to impress people on here by mentioning the zimmermann telegraph that prompted the U.S. to develop a convenient system of distrust against mexico and its people. the fact is that you do not address the point that I am making when it comes to the kind of illegal immigrants that we are talking about. To use your analogy, anyone who enters another country without legal documentation is illegal, therefore, those (at least 2 million) easter europeans living in the U.S. with overstay visas, boggus refugees documents and many other should also go with the brown immigrants. Moreover, I do not consider the mexian illegal immirants in the same light as the rest of the continent's illegals, since mexican still consider thos south western territories theirs and consider that should have rights to move back and forth as they did in the 18th,19th and the early part of the 20th century. This is the time when the senophobia begins and souther bigots rode the vanwagon with it because it was helpful to their cause of keeping the south and american as whole pure from pigmentation, since they already considered the blacks non-human.
