SANTO DOMINGO.- A group of journalists today expressed their concern with some lawmakers’ push to limit the guarantees in the Free Access to Public Information Law, and still more after the effort sought to constitutionally consecrate it as a State prerogative to decide on a news item’s "veracity."
“It places us under the danger of prior censorship, an odious practice of negating freedom of expression surpassed in our country since the decades of the Trujillo regime," said Juan Diaz Bolivar, the journalists’ spokesman.
The journalists called the gathering after ruling PLD party deputy Alfonso Crisóstomo, of Puerto Plata, on Wednesday submitted legislation which seeks to regulate the information the media serves to the citizens, as said Law stipulates.
The journalists spoke in a press conference in the Dominican Industries Association (AIRD), located on Sarasota Lincoln avenues, headed by Maria Isabel Soldevila, Nuria Piera, Huchi Lora, Ramon Colombo, Altagracia Salazar, among others.
They hailed the support from institutions such the Dominican Journalists Guild, the Institutionalism and Justice Foundation, Citizen Participation and the AIRD.
Crisóstomo’s bill proposes a change in the article on Freedom of Expression and Information, which states: “All persons have the right to information. This right includes the power to receive, look for, investigate and publish all types of information on governmental function by any media, channel or route, in adherence to what the Constitution and the Law determine."
The term “veracity of information" had been included in the legislation, but was rejected in the session of the National Assembly.
Diaz also asked the dozens of reporters and photojournalists present to sign a declaration in rebuke of the latest efforts to muzzle the press.
Threats and warnings
The investigative journalist Nuria Piera, whose singing exposés have ruffled the feathers of several senior government officials, acknowledged having received threats for her work over the years. “I get them but I’ve already developed an instinct on which of those I report to the authorities. It also depends on who’s heading the Police, the Armed Forces or the Investigations Department at the time.”
In that regard, Transparency and Justice Foundation president Trajano Vidal Potentini warned those who would seek to curtail the freedom of the press that the entity is ready file court action to defend it. “Regardless of the source our foundation is at the ready to file constitutional challenges in the effort materializes, and even in international levels if the Supreme Court rules against us.”

Great news that real journalist are wiling to stand up and fight to kill trujillismo in DR. Today some lawmakers are trying very hard to take us back 100 years and we must spread the word because if you think the cement plant in los haitises was bad then free access to information being taken of the table is even worse.

Why should we have freedom of the press and freedom of speech? No other communist country permits it. As we move more to the left and strengthen our ties to Chavez and Castro our country, sadly, will become more and more like theirs.

Not only do we have to defend transparency, the DR has to pass laws making it a criminal offense NOT to hand over public information in a timely fashion.
To allow Crisóstomo’s bill to even be submitted is crass injustice and LF should have him resign. But LF is too big of a pussy to do anything. So much for his “Zero Tolerance”.

juanb very luckily the Dominican nature is totally and completely against any form of strong authoritism such as curfews and censoring and saying what a person can and can not do or say .In some countries the population meekly accepts such edicts but here I think the Dominicans are much more free living .
I think Leonel plays a game in foreign affairs that is more or less up and down the middle but we must have a constitution that can only be amended by a referendum ..it is crazy to let politicians have the only say in this matter .

josean it is noce to see that you are still on the forum. I have not being on for a while and visit here and there. Getting to business, this whole new outcry for the press smells fishi to me, since the media has been under an umbrella which is dominated by cash and not by the truth of the news. It seems to me that the cash flow to the media has either stopped or there is simply a few that want o get Crisostomo, so they want more freedom to report. I wonder why they are not reporting on the staggering crime on the Island, the abuses against Haitians, the poverty attacking our people and finally, the under funded education system. oh, wait, I forgot, these people do not produce any extra money for the Dominican press. The press was highly suppressed here in the U.S. during the Bush years and we are still suffering for it. I have decided to watch British news instead when it comes to reporting from the Middle East and Africa since these channels offer more realism that what, cnt

People sure like to sell the " TALK ", while at the same time they want to be a " BOTELLA ". They want also be " PEGAO ", just like many of those journalysts and wanna be politicians. Everyone seems to forget that in this world there is no such thing as " DEMOCRACY ". Those who live in the U.S. feel that they live more free than anyboby else in the world, yet no country in the world practices modern slavery more fully than the U.S. who sells the world a false dream. Most everyone wants to come to the U.S. and once they are here they realize what they left behing, at the same time they are left with a selected choice of pretending that they are better off and showing off whenever they returned to their home country, giving a false impression. This is freedom of expression and information. No none does it better than the " MEDIAS ", and the government feeds it to them. They are just as croocket as politicians, they are thiefs with words.

Part of the job of being a politician is being responsible to those you represent not trying to hide the truth from them. This seems typical for some of the stupid politicians we currently have. They don't like the rules of their job so they try to change the rules. That is not how it works. You wanted the job and got it now play by the rules. We know this is too much to expect from some of them and they need to be replaced.

bienamor, you are correct about the news sources that are out there and how we here in the U.S. actually have to go out of our country in order to get balanced news. I for one follow many of the British news sources for my international and even national information. one of the greatest reporter in history is Robert Fisk, this guy is amazing and has no fear of telling the truth, since he is not worried about loosing his job. He was already booted out of the London times, when the paper was taken over by the monster who owns FOX NEWS, MURDOCK. As far as working for the people, the media in the DR is a shit hole and it can not be trusted for nothing. I have credible information without mentioning any names, but a big time drug dealer in Santiago was once called out by one of the local news caster. The next day that TV channel received a letter from the subject threatening them if the continued with their reporting on him. As expected the reporting stopped and for that year xmas,

To be honest I laughed and laughed for days, i even forwarded the message to my colleagues at the Dominican institute so they can have a laugh as well. So JR please explain yourself since i do not want to embarass you either, you know I am civil than that. Finally, JR how many students at port washington school district, i ask since I did some research work for port jefferson this past summer and they only have about 1500 students district wide. I hope your kids speak english if they are attending port washington schools since teachers over there need some emergency culture sensitivity training. Oh, I forgot you need some as well, so maybe your kids already feel unappreciated by a teaching staff that has issues with diversity.

JR, still do not know what you are talking about. Again, if you feel that because I will for ever fight against the injustices committmed against a people, then by all means call me what you want. At least I go to bed every night knowing that I will not stand up for injustices. Just as I stand for the scores fo immigrant children (majority Dominicans) coming through my High School, I will not deviate when it comes to other races. I believe that it is inmoral to simply stand up for your own, so due to the fact that I stand for my own here in the U.S. I will not allow my own to do to others what I do not allow here. I have worked many years in populating the schools in around the city with Dominican teachers so our kids can feel more comfortable in the classroom and have their culture counted and turned into a contributing factor in the classroom. So JR, I feel sorry for your ignorance maybe one day you could be as productive as I have been for our people, but also hold them,
