Santo Domingo.– Thousands of volunteers took part in the International Coastal Cleanup Saturday morning and afternoon, collecting thousands of pounds of trash that litter the country's beaches and shorelines.

Trash that would have otherwise gone into the water and harm the marine environment, from soda cans, beer and water bottles and paper, to plastic bags, old tires, cigarette butts, used mattresses, and even diapers, found their way to the recycling center for proper disposal.

The international coastal cleanup was coordinated by Ocean Conservancy in partnership with Dominican Republic's Fundacion Vida Azul.

This is a nice step with very little impact. Tomorrow garbage will start to accumulate all over again. Until citizens are not educated about littering, garbage will continue to show up all over the place. Such a beautiful country, such uneducated populace.

yes, we have a strange schitzophrenia in this great country. there are more shoeshine boys per square mile than any other country on earth, because people have to have well burnished shoes. and, we also have more car washes than any other country in the solar system. because the jeepeta has to be spit shined. but the guy with the glistening shoes , in the sparkling jeepeta, is throwing styrofoam boxes out the window on the malecon.

I wish the Dominican Government learn how to use the resources that they currently have. Per example: to use the Department of Correction to come out with a platoon of inmates, like a chain gang, of course not in chain but supervised by well armed Correction Officers with 870-P Remington shot-gun police models, to clean this coastal areas, also even to clean metropolitan area such as the capital and Santiago!

Camano; without chains you can forget it.
Most of the Garbage is generated by the people living on the many river banks that enters the sea and is blown onto the beaches. I even saw a full size refridgerator floating into the yachts docked in the Rio Dulce / Rio Salao in La Romana. They throw the garbage into the river and the garbage floats away with the current and presto.

The school system has to start teaching the youngest students that littering is filthy and unacceptable.

easyrider, most of the garbage is generated by mostly everybody. people have zero respect for the environment. i watched this guy get out of his jeepeta, enter a restaurant, eat a meal, then re-enter the jeepeta. but, not before he had emptied all his trash from his chariot into the parking lot. i looked at him, and he gave me a sheepish grin and motored off into the sunset.

HiHater , one of the beaches had to have been Caleta , the public beach at la Romana because it was as clean as a button today ,in some Pacific countries, these days occur two times a year and attract hundreds of thousands of people ,,it is a real party atmosphere

Dread;

That is true, I agree. when you drive behind a bus traveling from town to town, it's like a meteor shower of garbage flying out of the bus windows. ABSOLUTELY TERRIBLE!!
