SANTO DOMINGO. - Amid an unprecedented offensive in Dominican Republic’s war on drug trafficking, president Leonel Fernandez will demand more technical and financial assistance from the United Nations for the country to bolster its strategy.

The Head of State flew yesterday to New York to take part in the UN’s 64th General Assembly tomorrow among other activities, including meetings with several business leaders, heads of State and academic organizations.

Fernandez departed from San Isidro Airbase around noon accompanied by the first lady Margarita Cedeño, Press director Rafael Núñez, among other officials.

The Government’s position on drug trafficking, security along the border with Haiti, natural resources and the environment and the Honduras crisis are the topics the chief executive will address Wednesday before the UN Assembly.

During his one week stay in New York, Fernandez will attend events with the Secretary of State Hillary Clinton and ex president Bill Clinton, as well as with industrialists and officials of American trade in activities on DR-CAFTA agreement.

Local efforts

Fernandez’s participation in the UN takes place while the Dominican Government increases its efforts against drug trafficking, with record confiscations and arrests in the last few weeks.

A call for tenders is slated for this week for the purchase of two radars which detect illegal flights into the country, whereas the first of the Super Tucano intercept planes bought from Brazil are expected to arrive in November.

Lionel is representative of the street urchins in Santo Domingo....all he does is travel the world asking for handouts.....

"Ni hay un peso!" beneath an extended hand would make a great replacement for the current DR flag.

Charity starts at home!

What's stopping Prez LF and the RD Gov officials from arresting Tigueres (criminal gang-bangers) in my Santiago barrio near the Children's Hospital?

Which drug dealers are allowed to "pay to play" with the corrupt RD Gov drug enforcement (DNCD) and National Police?

How many more 14 year old boys must be turned to addicts to later drop out of school and start being criminals to support a new habit (as if being poor was not bad enough).

I invite Clinton anyone else to contact me so they can see how easily drugs are dealt on school routes (while police speed by infrequently in air conditioned Jeeps)! You must see it to believe!

Don't bet your METRO scholarship on LF riding the trains in NYC. LOL. He needs a few limos to carry all his entourage.
Has anybody noticed the Dominican flag on the private jet plane photo he just boarded? I didn't know the DR government is the proud owner of a new G4.
